Hi all,
My goal for this quarter is to build the domain authority of a site I have by 20 points (seo moz metrics). I'm thinking that niche & quality are going to be my friend. I need to build quality links to the home page to build the authority. Here's what I'm thinking of doing from a link building perspective.

Anchors

- Brand only

Link target

- Home page only

TLDs

- Edu, Gov, etc

Link types

- I know what I do NOT want, and that's comments..

What do you guys think?

Link target - You should definitely also target inner pages as well. Stronger your inner pages, the stronger your homepage.

As well as diversified anchors.

That's exactly what I've been doing, but the DA has actually gone down by 2 points. So basically I should carry on as normal, but focus more on quality links? I'd be really interested (from an experts) point of view, what BH link types are quality and which are not. I presume all comments are not.

Try all sorts of keyword variations, for example for the keyword 'blue cars' try:
- cars that are blue
- buy blue cards
- blue cars online
- blue cars here

Just think how people would link to your site naturally.

I made an experiment of creating authority in the similar way like you intended to do.
However, it did not work... The best advice I can give you is this one:
- Focus on links to inner pages - if each inner page has some decent links, it will boost your authority.
- Good and clear navigation on the page is crucial!
- Only original content all over the site

Decent level of authority of inner pages on your site => Decent level of domain authority.

Definitely link to the inner pages also and diversify your anchor text.

Understood. I was of the premis that DA came from root domain links. I'll start building quality to pages on the entire domain. The problem is there are 150,000 and half of them dynamic!

You need high PR links, some buy, some commenting (if you want).
I have a couple sites around 60 that were built purely on spam links. I believe DA uses the quality of the page, but doesn't discount the number of OBL of the page.

Thanks Jon,
What would you say are the best source? A&P? OR tld specific such as ac.uk?

Thanks

Are you kidding me?:) 150,000 pages??? It is user generated content? If it is Autoblog, or just spun content, I must disappoint you. It will never become an authority domain, does not matter what you do in terms of linkbuilding.

Half of the pages are dynamic and it's kind of on the white side of things. It's actually a good authority at the moment, but trying to build on what we've got.

Even I don't want to ask, why you want to build the Moz DA,
when for sure you expect ranking from Google, which not use the DA.

Anyway:
  • many links from high DA sites, chinese are perfect - as thousand of them have high DA
  • all of them are good - no matter visible or not, in header or footer
  • random keywords as "quality content" from dictionary are pretty fine - Moz love such quality.

That's all what you need to increase DA to insane level - checked and confirmed.
If you would like to have also the "0" Moz Spam Score - you can add some fake data such Phone Number and some useless code, for ex:

- Google Font API
- Google Tag Manager
- Links to LinkedIn
- Browser Icon
- Facebook Pixel
- etc

All of those funny "spam" signals you will find here:
https://moz.com/help/link-explorer/link-building/spam-score

Same as with DA - none from above collections of funny Moz spam signals are used by Google.
But I am sure - that it doesn't matter at all when you have on mind just Moz DA ;)

Cheers, Greg.
