can u elaborate what is misinformed here?
i think if you build more backlinks to your new website from not related website, there have a chance to punish by google

A link is a link is a link.
The more links you have from a variety of sources and variety in keywords then this can only help your rankings. You do not need links to b from related sites to help your rankings. I have several top ten, top 5 and no.1 keywords that prove this.

A link is a link. It wont have as much positive effect as it would if it was relevant to your niche. It wouldn't be negative, though.
That is consider as backlink and i agree on that i never oppose that it's not consider as back link ! even i have so many keywords for which i got #1 and top 1 to 8 ranking. I just want tell that getting backlink from the relevant niche category will help you more and that's what happen with me as well..
so i m not misinformed any one i just reply based on my experience and you don't have to rights to judge any one and make any statement who can harm the reputation of any one..
I request u to be fair with every one... and if u knows more then wht share it and make correct others without making any statement.. here we are to share our experience not to fight or not to underestimate any one...

Just go and look at some of the top keyword and the sites that are ranking for them. You will see things you thought were dead in 1996

Did not intend to offend you...but you did say it would not be positive or negative....so you were saying would have zero effect. However, as stated a link is a link and while relevant niches might help a bit more to look natural in Google's eyes, a link is still a link irrespective of niche.
Eg, i could get 100 high quality PR backinks from unrelated sites and would easily outrank you with 10,000 low quality relevant niche blog posts.
So its not even just about relevance but quality of the links. This is a very important point to understand.

The problem with all these kinds of 'bad linking' is that if Google would tie a negative effect to them, it would be just to easy to misuse that to penalize your competitors.
Same with penalized domain redirects, if the penalty would cary through to your website via the 301 redirect (which would make sense if you think about it), it would be just to easy for you to buy a bunch of penalized domains (or create them yourself, more fun
) and redirect to your competition...

maybe if you take it to the extreme, for instance, building backlinks on porn sites linking to a site that sells kids toys, or the other way around maybe that would trigger a manual imposed penalty from an actual person working at google, anyone got any experience with something like this?

When building backlinks you don't want just traffic you want quality traffic so it is in your best interest to build quality links that may have a positive impact on your business and not just inflate your traffic numbers.

People who believe something like that, are clearly suffering from a lack of common sense.
It's just not possible for Google to make it so, that a backlink would harm someone. That would lead straight into a massive chaos, where everyone and their mom would just try to destroy their competion.
Besides that it's totally unnatural that only niche related sites link to each other. If the average Joe who has a personal blog likes to shop at Walmart, why would he not put a link on his site to Walmart? Nothing wrong with doing something like that. We, as we do Seo, shouldn't forget that "usual" people don't think the way we do. They most likely don't even know what a relevant link is. So how would Google explain it to the avarage Joe that he isn't supposed to link to Walmart? And even more, how would they explain it to him that he gets punished for doing so?
