301 redirect loophole?

Here is a hypothetical question...
If i have a client that wants to pay only after I rank his site for a certain keyword, is it viable to try to rank a domain i own and redirect it to his site using a 301 redirect. That way i can ultimatly make sure i am not cheated, and just give him the domain after i have been paid. I can rank the keyword but as i dont know the client well and its such a risky proposition on my side..is this a good idea?

well thats the point. I would be getting him the benifit of the keyword while limiting my risk if it didnt work out. Then obviously once ranked, would port the domain over to him.

That's the best and (arguably) only approach for such a client. Should he try to pull a lame excuse for not paying you, you simply take away the redirect, and tell him he shouldn't be worried because you can use the ranking for another site of yours. Should he try to pay you to get back the rank, you simply let him know you're now charging two-three times as much as before, upfront cash, though if the client turns out to be a scammer it's better to fire him and move on.

This is a very poor way to run a business.

If a client does not want to pay an upfront fee or fee for work completed before ranking, then you are marketing to and/or acquiring the wrong clients.

Threatening to and actually pulling the plug on a client's ranking results is no way to build a solid, reputable SEO business, if that's your intention.

Get clients who have a real marketing budget and who need results.

There are actually people offering SEO services that charge on a monthly basis for the ranking services, and have such a redirect kill switch. You can even find examples if you search BHW. Not saying it's good or bad, but it's a business model that some companies are implementing.

And equally, there are also some people offering SEO services on BHW and other forums who haven't a clue about SEO. These are the ones who give legitimate SEO service providers a bad name. It's one of the many reasons that some business's think SEO is synonymous with scam.

My point above is that you can avoid the problem in the first place, by getting the right clients, in order to build a long term SEO business.

I think you confused my question with one that required a moral judgement. No need for some righteous crusade here. I don't know how the word scam even made its way into your comment. The fact of the matter is that in real life, you have find a way to deal with difficult clients or maybe you make so much you don't have to...i don't.

I am not trying to scam anyone and will genuinely provide good rankings for my client but i think its silly to not research ways to protect oneself if one feels the need to. If you have nothing useful to contribute to this legitimate question, please get out of the way. No offense.

who are you to judge what the right clients are?

If the OP feels comfortable in offering services on such a business model, and he gets clients that do to... then I don't see the problem...

Thirdly make enough of your company so people are ready to pay at least some money upfront and you can show the increase in rankings from time to time as the payment goes on.

First pulling the redirects always works, no links=no rank, google needs to crawl the links again.
