BHW Search sucks :(

Two problems:

1) can't search three letter words such as cpa

2) gives results for any search term (ie searching for: limited paypal, will bring up anything with limited in it, and anything with paypal in it)


Can we add some search booleans?

I'm obviously not looking for threads just about CPA... and 'limited paypal' was just an example.

Let's say I wanted to learn all I could about what happens when someone is banned from a CPA network... I'd ideally just search 'cpa banned'.... except cpa doesn't get searched, and even if it did, it would pull up ALL threads with the word CPA in it, and all threads with the word banned in it.

i agree the search works for every word in a strin rather than the term searched for - if you have something like how to join paypal

every term that has join in it
every term that has paypal in it etc etc will be returned meaning a lot of digging

Thats how vbulletin works unfortunately, its not BHWs fault. I tried searching three letter words before and got no results. Its annoying but maybe vbulletin will update the problem.

I think that this is a key issue with all members and has a lot of impact on the thread about turning BHW into a pay site. A lot of noobs don't use the search (that's a given) but when so many of us that rely on search engines to make money and we can't find what we are looking for, how can we expect them to find something before asking a silly question? Hopefully it gets solved soon since there is so much info on the forum.

Yes something needs to be done with the serach..
Its inpossible to finbd what you search for.

Have you tried placing quotations around your search phrase, in the BHW advanced search?

IE "limited paypal"

thats quite true, vbullitin does indeed have a very poor search engine. i think i might try going out to google search engine to search for something on BHW next time.

I think there is a thing called advanced search on BHW and a thing called google.

But, if you can't find it using advanced search here on BHW, then do an advanced search on google. Just type blackhatworld.com into the bottom text box (Search within a site or domain) and it should pull up your results.

It's a pain in the ass, yes, but it's all we have to work with.

You are correct about the search engine at BHW. It does indeed suck. As for vB, I believe we have enough talented people around here to help with a query string to improve it.

The search results usually don't show you what your actually looking for. Its all because the forum search engine needs to be indexed.

Aha, thanks for the quotes tip Essential Clix... it doesn't actually find that exact string-- only posts with all words, which is great..... and also the Google search idea, and to expand on that you can simply enter this into the normal search box:

site:blackhatworld.com search string

I hope no one feels that I'm ripping on BHW, I love BHW.

Yes actually vBulletin can do this.

You need to enable 'Fulltext Search' in vBulletin Options >> Search Type

After that you "may" need to 'Rebuild Search Index' under Maintenance >> Update Counters.

Then when you search in quotes "blackhat rocks"

It will return threads with 'blackhat rocks' but not threads with 'blackhat seriously rocks' for example.

You can change it to allow 3 letter words like CPA, but since vB relies on MySql's full text search features/algo this needs to be changed at the server level not in vB. But given the size of BHW you will wind up with a pretty big search index and table scans at 3 char.

Edit: While i'm here, why don't you guys drop all the .css and .js in external files? The <head> section is 500 characters long, so it will trim down the pages a bit.
