@ rhino2020, surely, based on some of the statements you made, this rattled you - if only a little. That said, you have now been placed on a number of radars; I hope you understand the magnitude of that statement.
Also, the funny thing about DAs in the USA is that they often play politics. Meaning if the DA needs to make a statement to voters, or if they are a new DA trying to make a name for themselves, they probably would have aggressively pursued charges against you.
Of course, this next statement is pure conjecture but the DA in your case may possibly have assessed his or her case load and decided that your case was not going to do much for their career and that is the only reason they didn't pursue criminal charges.
There is a case going on in Georgia at the moment in which a mother was standing on the sidewalk waiting to cross the street, [jaywalking] and her little son broke free from her grasp and attempted to bolt across the street. A repeat offender drunk driver comes barreling through and hits and kills the kid and flees the scene.
The repeat DUI offender was admittedly drunk in this offense as he was in his previous DUI convictions. BUT, the charges brought against him only landed him in jail for six months. :Eyecrazy:
However, the DA went after the mother with all vim and vigor! The DA charged the mother with "Homicide by vehicle." :Eyecrazy:
Why? It was all about politics. She was found guilty but the judge threw the conviction out and offered her the opportunity of a new trial. I bring all of this up because you literally bit the bullet on this one.
Thank your lucky stars and don't look back. People offering you advice from other countries don't understand that the USA happily incarcerates more citizens than any country in the world. If you return back to this game, as most often do, don't expect any mercy the next time around.
