rankings dropped, don't understand why??

Hi all,

I have been doing whitehat linkbuilding for a little webshop with wooden kids toys, so nothing gambling, sex, or get rich schemes related.

At first I was building backlinks just to the homepage for one keyword and rankings started to increase and PR went from 0 to 2. but then progress stalled. Then I built about 7 backlinks for another keyword linking to a subpage and boom! next day the keyword for the homepage was on position 3 (in google.nl) and the new keyword on position 11. And they stayed there for about 2 weeks. Then I decided to start building backlinks for keywords to 5 more sub-pages, in total about 30 links on the same day. Next morning, the ranking for the homepage keyword fell to position 500 approx. And the other keywords are nowhere. I didn't get a message in webmaster tools.

Did I get penalized? WTF happened?

Amen to that...also vary the type of backlinks and anchor keywords...don't be too obvious in front of Google's "eyes" on the keyword you are trying to rank.

One month get web2.0 blast, second month get 20k scrapebox blast to first months links, 3rd month do bookmarking, 4th month blast those bookmarks with scrapebox again...

Do different thing every month, you can even do forum profiles on some month but dont over do it.

I've seen sites sit at #1 for 6+ mths with huge drops in link velocity for keywords with >$5MM/yr annual revenue (like doing 40,000 links in a month, and then cutting this down to <1000)
I think it's, honestly, overstated to hell.

Thanks for the advice. I have one question, when you say making forum profiles, do you mean putting a backlink in your profile without making any forum posts at all?

Absolutely... But with newer sites the effects are more dramatic. Plus an established domain can handle large swings in link velocity.

But I know what you're saying... The rule is that there are no rules with Google - it's all a crap-shoot at the end of the day. But you're an experienced link builder - and this guy is getting started - so it's in his interests to play the 'safe' odds.

I think you got dropped because the "honeymoon" period from G ended. Now build backlinks in bigger scale and add content to your site.

Aint that the truth, one thing that is consistent on this thread is that variation is key. Every other technique or tool is debated to some extent but the one thing everyone seems to agree on is keep the links diverse.

Why? Because everyone is sure google likes links but not everyone is sure which type google prefers, so keeping everything diverse assures you that at the least you are getting SOME links google will love for you.

The "honeymoon" period can last from week to few months. There is no exact science how to determine this.

Yeah, sorry to hear it's happened to you but it's like the other guys here have said. Google is temperamental and it can love you one day and forget all about you the next. It's called the honeymoon period for a reason. This place is full of posts which mention a situation just like yours ? and the funny thing is that it can bounce back up just as quickly and then drop AGAIN.

As everyone else has said, variation is absolutely essential. If Google was going out for a meal, you'd advise it to go for tapas ? overloading on one kind of link can annoy it if it decides it doesn't like that kind of link, but if it can pick away at a varied platter it's likely to be happy and find something that it really enjoys.
