I'm competing in a tough market and targeting only a 2 word KW, and so I have multiple strategies going.

However, I can say that I did notice about a 1-2 page jump (15-20 positions) in rankings about a week after my links had been completed, just be sure to get them indexed otherwise you won't notice a great change.
