Well, not everybody has the tech skills. Also, if you create your own, it won't be considered that much trustworthy by customers, I guess.

you can buy from godaddy for cheap. Major trust worthy providers are verisign and twate ssl certificates which are bit expensive but welknown to whole world. Creating your own not considered as trust worthy.

Namecheap has some good priced certs.

What about your own hosting company? Luckily for me, I got some free when purchasing domains at namecheap, but obviously that does not apply as you already have the website.

Namecheap has a sale going on right now but they really made it a pain for me. The price was great though.

If you are looking for a very reliable and reputed SSL provider then go for verisign ssl they are expensive. If not contact your hosting they will be having one or go for godaddy's SSL its economical.

Godaddy has the cheapest SSL certificates at the moment. They're only cheap for an year though, so unless its a long term project, go with Godaddy.

i bought mine from http://openfortress.nl/product/ but they just resell SSl for http://www.geotrust.com/

GeoTrust is around $100/yr.. pretty decent price and accepted by 98% of browsers
