Just wondering if Google's Keyword Tool correct on the amount of competition it says when finding keywords? I am jumping feet first into building websites again after months of not even designing nor building sites online (had an offline venture that I moved on from). Anyways my niche that I am targeting has 1600 global searches monthly and 800 local with a low competition rate...

I know this isn't a lot but there are a ton of relating keywords to my niche that focus almost on the same exact thing with 2k global 1k local etc. and also the keyword domain is available with an exact match. Should I go ahead and jump into this based on competition rates and knowing how to solve the problem that people are facing and searching for...

The competition you see in Google Keywords Tool is the Adwords competition when you want to advertise with CPC not an SEO competition. For SEO competition you check it manually or using some tools.
Adwords competition will also give you an idea about profitable niches. High competition=High chances to make money, for that you will have to seek golden keywords that have low seo competition/high adwords competition+/-high CPC (if you want to use adsense)

You can't get any closer to the source of the information than the GKWT. You really have no choice but to trust it.

Yeah the competition is ad competition, if you want to check SEO competition, you need another tool. I use traffic travis. Believe there's a link in the downloads section.

Honestly?

I really never knew that.

Does the ad competition not correlate to SEO competition?

They usually relate a bit. I'll explain why.

When a keyword is in very high demand, it is usually high paying, and so there are a lot of Adsense people that make sites for this keyword. All of these sites they make end up being hard to compete and the keyword develops to high SEO competition.

Alright so I scratched that keyword and found a bit better keyword but it has a lower search volume a month... the search volume is only 390 global / 290 local (using Traffic Travis) but the competition is low at only 4% and PPC is $5.33 so I am thinking this would be an alright domain to grab because exact phrase domain is available. Give me some opinions please...

if you are going with adsense than i would not use this KW, the search volume is way to low.. i never go after a kw with less than 1k global but that;s just me

Based on the Ad Comp I'm pretty certain that KW is not worth going for. You'd make like $1/month.

If you already have a website up, just put up an inner-page to rank for that KW, shouldn't take you that much of resources to rank.

As others have stated it doesn't really give you anything solid. I've been impressed with a program called SerpAttacks. There is a free version out and I really think its accurate, more-so than Traffic Travis.

Well I just purchased a domain for keyword that has a bit more searches at 590 / 390 and has a PPC of between $4.04 - 8.54 (2 programs gave me 2 different things) and I am going to see how I do on this one. I have figured out this will be very easy to rank for due to the fact there are 2 sites in #3-4 that have no PR or back links so with some promotion this should be simple...

And the big plus is there are several yahoo answer questions a day on this and hardly anyone is answering them so now its time to build a site throw some content and adsense on it and see how this does... I think I am going to post a journal on this one tonight.

Also, are the keyword totals for GKT accurate? Some of them seem weird and impossible.

The ad competition is an average, so the stats may not be completely accurate. It's also a good idea to look at trends.

The total keywords in GKT depends on the search phrase. There's a limit of 100 keywords normally and 800 if you're signed into your G account.

Yes this is a problem I often come across.. There is no real scientific tool that can help discern the competitiveness for a keyword within SEO - but I wish there was.

Lets say we want to figure out the competitiveness for the keyword 'lose weight' - competition in GWKT is calculated by the cost of keywords, whereas competition in SEO is defined by a mass of other factors..

Very generally speaking there is normally sort sort of correlation between the competition on GWKT & SEO competition but it is often not the case. I have found keywords that appear to be quite competitive on GWKT, but you can rinse them on SEO and appear in the top results very quickly..
