While the rest of your post is a valid point, the above is not really true. Although such people make up a large portion of anonymous, many of them are not kids and are professionals at what they do. Not to say they will succeed, but the whole "kids in basement" thing is a media fantasy, as is a lot of new lately unfortunately.

Mexico City Anonymous group anounced it has cancelled reprisals against the Zetas cartel for being a very risky operation. It was informed through a press and social networks for different users.
After the disappearance of one of its members in Veracruz, one of the members announced reprisals against the drug cartel ?Los Zetas? with ?Operation Cartel.?
However, because of the great risks involved in leaking information and to safeguard the integrity of persons adhering to the collective group of hackers, they decided to cancel the whole operation.
?Destroying # OpCartel because the lives of people who are not participating can be put at risk,? was published in the first text of the cancellation of the operation, through Twitter account @ Sm0k34n0n.
Before this action the company of strategic intelligence analysis, Stratfor, published an article about the ?serious risk? involving actions of leakage of information about members of Los Zetas.
?Last October 6 Anonymous posted to inform on those who are members of Los Zetas ? if Anonymous carries out its threat, it will almost certainly lead to death of the persons named as members of the cartel, whether or not the information published is accurate, ?says the article by Stratfor.
In an interview with Milenio, two members of Anonymous, Skill3r and GlynissParoubek were in contact to explain the circumstances:
Milenio ? Why was it decided to cancel the operation?
Anonymous ? We can not be reckless administrators to condemn to death those who participate, we have talked and discussed extensively by all and it was decided to remove it.
Milenio ? So why issue threats?
Anonymous ? It?s very easy to make a video on behalf of Anonymous and launch air threats, but to think, plan, and evaluate the pros and cons is another story,? they said.
Milenio ? What?s next?
Anonymous ? ?There will be other operations, but for now we hope to make clear that the cartel operation is false.?
Anonymous released a statement where they reject any relation with pages publishing names of officials involved in the Los Zetas cartel.
?Dear followers and supporters of this page (Anonymous). I hereby disclaims Mexico Anonymous entirely the responsibility of the news of hacking a page that is linked to alleged Zetas cartel,? is detailed in the text circulated.
?Our struggle is not of this type and our ideals do not go with that operation. The article published by various electronic means is completely false. We ask for your support to spread this news? They ended denying the media who published the page.

Anonymous was barking up the wrong tree at that one fucking with Zetas, threatining to expose them then backing off because of fear from reprocutions, I wouldn't be surprised if Zeta doesn't grab up some more anons because of this mistake. its just like calling them and saying hey you kidnapped my friend if you don't let him go we are going to expose you hanging up the phone and calling back later in the day and saying oh forget it we changed our minds.. you don't think they would target you for that... come on man. I think the same applies for what they posted as I explained in my last sentence I don't think we've heard the last from Zeta they are going to set some examples of why they are not one to be threatened game on.

If they are telling the truth, a big if, then they either had this information on the cartels before or where able to get it. The fact that they did not release this information till one of there people is supposedly kidnapped should tell you all you need to know about these people. If there was anything even remotely admirable about this group they would have obtained and released this information about the cartels a long time ago and potentially saved many innocent lives.

You don't fuck with zetas, They are so powerful,even the State of Texas fears with them,and has a plan to use the National Guard and Air National to secure the border in case Mexico falls apart.
The Zetas are also the most tech savy of all the cartels,they were founded by members of the most elite special ops unit in the Mexican Military. Anonymous needs to shut the fuck up,they really don't know what there doing.

Kidnapped member will probably get his head and limbs cut off and dumped in the streets of mexico. These are ruthless and bloodthirsty mexican cartel members who literally saw people's heads off with chainsaws, anonymous should have offered money in exchange for the hostage not retaliate with a threat. I'm all for anons movement against corruption and consolidated power but this is a deadly war they are waging.

I am glad to hear they backed off. This couldn't have been a decision made by their "top members" because it was completely foolish. Do you guys who are cheering on Anonymous realize what happens if they would release that information? People would be murdered. This isn't a game.
If you are a taxi driver, and you don't co-operate with that cartel, you don't just get beat up. Your daughters get raped, and you watch your entire families throats get cut, and then your throat gets cut slowly. Same with a police officer. If this Zetas group knows your identity, they go to your home, and they give you a choice. You either co-operate or your family dies. Just to show you we are serious, we will kidnap one of them.
They don't have a choice. Releasing information like that doesn't hurt the group at all. The only people who go after them is the Army whose identities are protected. If their identities get released, every person in their family could be killed, and sometimes is.
The information age will NOT stop these people unless they can find information on LOCATIONS that the Mexican Army needs for their operations. That is the only way they could help. This is a war fought on the ground. They have no morals. You can't take them down based on corruption. If a police officer not arresting some drug dealers means his daughter doesn't get raped, I can tell you I am all for the police officer looking the other way.
Maybe all of you who thought this was a good idea should look at the reality a little clearer before you cheer on releasing names like that and realize they have families that need to be protected. You have NO idea what you are even cheering for.

The cartels reach already extends heavily into the United States, with the way the economy is looking it wont be that long until you start hearing about USCG personal on the take.

Well, I think Anonymous will pull an upset this coming Nov 5th.
I think they hacked info on Zetas recently. They did a lot in the past and it just happens that Zetas crossed the line. Now they will have to answer to anonymous.

If the information is real,why wouldn't they hand it over to the FBI? The guy is probably already dead now,and a video is probably going to be released in a few days.

Secondly, obviously they do not approach things with a unified front. This isn't the first case when some person says Anonymous is gonna do something, and then go back on it the next day.
Instead Anonymous operates like a cell based organization.
Central leadership and unified decision making are critical to any one party's longevity and influence.
This is why the cartels win if Anonymous goes after them. The cartels possess all of these things.

They could start by torturing the guy they kidnapped until he talks. Don't know a lot of computer hacker geeks who would last having their fingernails ripped out ... hard to type then.
Anyways, anonymous isn't trying to get the mexican army or any government to chase after the cartels. If you read the story, it is rival drug cartels who would do all the killing and the people getting killed would be members of government, police, etc. who turn a blind eye because they're corrupt and affiliated with the kidnappers.
