301 Aged Domain to New one

Ok, so I'm starting a website that's going to be competing with a bunch of old sites. All top 10 are over 6 years old, and I've got a newly registered domain.

I know that 301'ing a PR domain to a new domain will transfer the pr (at least to a certain extent)

My question, is it worth it (will it do any good) to 301 a 10 year old domain(s) to my site? Will it have any effect?

It will transer PR but won't help you alot if it's not ranked on KW that you want to rank.
If it's local related KW try use google maps/places to get first spot.
At the begining if your users doesn't stay long on your site try to avoid all google codes such as An**ytics, Ad**nse, Webm**ter tools etc.
Check your competition BL. If you find any site that looks spamy or have duplicate content - report it ]:->

Thanks! So, I get that pr transfers for the most part, but do you know anything about just plain age? Does any of the quicker indexing/trust that comes with an old domain help a new site?

At the begining try to make 301 form few subpages, than another and another. After few days do 301 from whole domain.

301 from whole domain is good but only if you are sure that you will not need this domain anymore.

Yes It will transfer PR but won't help you lot..if the older domain's keyword is not ranked. I guess through 301 you can also get some backlinks from the old domain. But be careful don't be trying to copy the content from old site. New domain should have fresh unique content.

The age of the 301 redirect should not transfer over and make your new domain any older.

What does transfer over is page rank and link juice from the old domain.

Would suggest focusing on link building if you want to compete.
