How much to edit to improve SEO?

So I have been working on my writing to improve SEO. So some of my pages are lets say ranked at the top 15 for a certain keyword. If I was going to modify the SEO for that article to improve its rank how much should I modify and not Modify.

I have been slowly building up my long tail words to hopefully build up the links to my site

What I always do is go for the general keywords.
If you target them, you automatically will get the long term keywords.

There are many onpage metrics to understand, some important and some not so much.
Good to know the difference and focus your time and energy wisely.

Metrics:
Title
URL
Header tags
Description
Domain age
PR
Bounce rate
load time, etc. etc.

Try this out to get you started:
1 - Download market samurais free trial (you can find a 40 day free trial around)
2 - Also download the most recent version of "IBP" you can find.

With market samurai, - run a "seo competition" for each keyword, and enter your specific URLS as "add custom URLS".
Then see where you stand vs/ your competition and check out those on-page metrics.

With IBP - enter a new project and run optimization reports for your specific keywords and URLs. Then see where you stand with your competitors and general onpage SEO.

Both of these tools will show you what some of the most important metrics are, as well help you see how you need to stack up against your competitors.
Both very important!
Review the results and then research the details of the metrics you aren't familiar with, and make correct adjustments to your pages.

Also, to get detailed onpage data on loading times, there's a tool called
YSlow - install and run this on your browser with your site and pages if you're seeing high loading times and get those corrected.

General other tips: - If you're running WP - pay attention to tags and categories. Also, through WP you have access to several "seo plugins" to help you with onpage metrics so you don't forget or to help you learn.

I would suggest you to mainly concentrate on the content of the article and the title. Next comes the meta tag, try keeping it below 150 characters also adding footer links to every page may also help a great deal to improve the page ranking. Also remember to maintain a fairly low keyword density (say about 2-3%).
