My journey into ORM

I know a lot of people may have missed that epic thread by 7878 on his experience with ORM.

Before I tried his marketing approach, I used the rip off report sites and things like that, which I received No response.

Then two weeks later I run up on 7878 offline method on advertising your services for ORM. I've sent out the letters last Thursday and had no response back yet.

This is my journey....

I will. I guess I'll give it to this coming Thursday before I call. 7878 said it took 3 weeks to get $17K...it doesn't take that long for them to receive the letters, so he may gave a little time for them to receive it and then called.

Either way I WILL make this work

I'm actually about an hour from mailing 23 of the 7878 method myself. A little worried you haven't had any people reaching out to you yet, though... how many did you send?

The area I focused on was property management...terrible reviews for all 30 I sent out.

I didn't focus all my letters in one industry, I sent to a mix of high-end restaurants, hotels, resorts, luxury apartments, construction / home maintenance companies, high-end salons... I think that's it. It'll be interesting to see how our different approaches w/r/t prospect selection play out.

All mine obv. have a 3-star or worse average on Google with > 5 reviews, with at least 3 of them with *scathing* write-ups or headlines.

Yea I had a lot of scathing reviews too...if they don't care what they read about what the customers are saying, then they don't need to be serving customers

I've began making my ORM portfolio using sites like Gplaces, Tripadviser, etc. I like to show the prospect that he isn't being dissed only on one site, but multiple sites where there are a myriad of scathing letters.

Remember, don't focus on costs, bring their attention that they could be losing potentially thousands per month. Don't restrict your service to just online either- I've been prepping my program to include offline reputation repair where a coupon deal, direct mailing, and even a stamp program (and more that I just won't share quite yet). Also 'shop' around at other ORM sites and try to get quotes for what you are doing. Comparing your price with the HIGHLY overpriced campaigns that major ORM companies run is also a great tactic.

Wow! Cheers. Had never heard of trip advisor before. They have much, much more reviews for Companies than Places does. I can imagine printing off bad review after bad review will only get their attention even further. Cheers.

I also did a neat little composite page of terrible TripAdvisor headlines / "One Circle" ratings for one of my bigger prospects (25-50M yearly revenue per Manta) in addition to the Google Places rundown -- with the worst ones in bigger type. It was awesome seeing all those hurtful reviews staring you right in the face as you pull it out of the envelope... remember to experiment with presentation as well as source material for maximum impact!

So I got a call today from one of the businesses I sent mail to *yesterday*.....

Call didn't go so well. I was a little flustered because he caught me by surprise and I'd never done this before -- in hindsight, I should have let it go to voicemail and called back with the research and stuff in front of me.

I think my biggest mistake was giving him a ballpark price on a one-time cleanup -- it was impossible to get a face-to-face meeting after throwing a number out there. Next time I will say I can't give a quote until I get together with them and ask questions about their business, etc.

7878, do you (or anyone else reading) have any tips for that first phone contact with prospects after a direct mail campaign like this?

When you pick up a call unprepared, its no problem at all. Just stay calm and remember, you don't have to discuss ANYTHING business. When I get unexpected calls, I like to use the call to turn it into an APPOINTMENT.

A good way to be prepared for the next phone call would be to have a general idea of what you will do to your potential clients. Summarize what you will do for them, why they need you, and that you would love to discuss this over an appointment.

Make them agree to meet you at a time when you ARE prepared. Never discuss figures beforehand. I did that when I was still new and when the "estimated price" was lower than the "proposed price", they flipped. When they ask for a ballpark figure, say that you will need to examine their case in particular and that you can get him a proposal in a day or two.

I had one business call me, she thanked me for showing her that info, but she chopped it up to disgruntle tenants and they get a bulk of their business from Craigslist

There's some really useful info in here about how to get the business to decide that they need your services. When the owner or manager first calls me I like to go into a little more detail about why having a good online reputation is so important for them and then set up an appointment to meet with them at their office. This way I can take a look around at what they have in their office or business and get a better idea of how they spend their money. In the meantime, after the first call I do the research on how difficult it will be to help them so that I can come up with a low end figure that I will not go any lower than and a figure that I would like to get based on the amount of work that will have to be done. This will be the lowest estimate that I will start off with. If I get the impression during the onsite discussion that they might be willing to spend a little more then I will up the quote a little to see if they go for it. Either way they will usually try to negotiate the price some so it helps to have the amount decided on beforehand that you will not go any lower than.

You had a perfect reply for her 'we get most of our business from CL'...

Pretty sure there is a reason for that (hint: bad reviews...)
