does bounce rate effect google serps?

Guys,

in what way does bounce rate effect your serps? if any?
i just watched a matt cu*ts video where he said google does not use any data from google analytics to determine rank?

Is this true? if yes, this means other then google toolbar they have no way of knowingbounce rates?

This is my theory: It doesn't hurt but it can help.

I say this because I believe there are a lot of quality sites that have high bounce rates (think blogs, digg type sites etc) where all the new content is on the front. On the other hand though, if a user is going to a website and then clicks through to another page theres no way google would ignore that kind of indication. Just my opinion though.

im pretty sure (dont ask me why im sure, but i am) that once you hit top 3 spots, Google lets you sit there for a probation period and analyzes how your site does with the traffic. If the bounce rate is low - aka long time on the page or visits more than one page - than it keeps you there (unless someone beats u with SEO). If your bounce rate is high, it just kicks u back down (still page 1 but lower).

They certainly know every single time someone clicks back to the search results after visiting your site.

The bounce rate means the amount of time visitors on your blog to read before the move off. so if the bounce rate is high google determines that your site is not relevant to the keyword and you can get the booth but if they stay longer and the bounce rate is low, the doomass google believe your site is relevant to the keyword and they help your serp as if there are not plugin that helps reduce bounce rate. i think i saw it on thsi forum.

I m on 1st postion and my bounce rate is more then 70% Still google give me favor

IMHO the bounce rate does affect your SERP. You will see the effect on the next panda update (when Google gather enough data for your site).

Like someone said above I don't think it can hurt you if it's bad, but it can help if the bounce rate is good. I like to think that Google knows that competitors can do things to other sites so they try not to penalize too much if at all. More about giving positive benefits instead of taking them away if you know what I mean

Yes, bounce rate may affect your SERP rankings...

High bounce rate = Poor user experience.
And, Google does not love websites that deliver poor user experience.

While they don't use Analytics data for ranking, they do use bounce to determine relevancy.
The bounce rate they are measuring is the percentage of people who hit the "back" button after arriving at your site.

This is simply false. A user may have found exactly what they were looking for on your site and has no need to click around because of the great user experience.

If I google "how to make crayons" and your site tells me how to make crayons, I'll probably bounce after I know. I'm not interested about your post on making paper snow flakes or why you got into blogging in the first place. I've found what I'm looking for and now I'm bouncing.

As others have said, it probably helps if people don't bounce but it doesn't hurt if they do since that is NOT an indication that they are unhappy with your site.

What if you hit the BACK button right away because you realize this is a MFA site (or whatever crap).
Isn't that called "a high bounce rate"? Don't you think Google might take this into consideration?

No, if they leave right away, that is how long they spent on your site, not the bounce rate.

Bounce rate: Bounce rate is the percentage of single-page visits or visits in which the person left your site from the entrance (landing) page.

So if I spend 5 minutes reading your post or 2 seconds analyzing your site is crap, both count as a bounce if I don't click on another page in your site.

When bounce rate low means many readers stay at a long time around your site, and thats why at google point of view knows that your site are useful and your site content are targeted for that topics.. And google give the benefits

When speaking about bounce rate, 2 types of pages are doing well.

Type 1: Page that has a very low bounce rate, but pages people go to from this site must have high "Average time on page". By high, I mean at least 3 minutes.

Type 2: Page that has high bounce rate (calmly more than 90 percent), but people spend in average more than 3 minutes on this site.


How I know it? Because I am number one for several inner pages on one let's call it "authority site", and all sites that ranked number 1 are either type 1 or type 2 as described.

I don't really think it will have much of an effect unless your bounce rate is very high.
