The thought hit me today. Why not make an article directory.

Free daily content
Heaps of links indexed by google
I'm guessing a decent PR in the long run
I'm also guessing decent traffic too, due to all the 'unique' content being posted to your site.

It all seems way too good to be true. Curious to see what others think, post your thoughts.

You'll have to implement some mechanism to check for the duplicate content. Else all your pages would be just copy - paste stuff and that won't add much value to it.

Yeah of course. I will not make it auto approve of course. I'd have filters to stop duplicate content and articles with alot of links. I'd also be manually reviewing majority to keep it shit-free as much as I can.

No offense buddy but this is the worst idea that you could ever think off. I had to sell three article directories after they grew to reasonable size in the last year due to the AMR spam involved. And I can say for sure that you hardly get any clicks on ads as those are AMR spam where nobody needs to even login. Even if somebody logs in they quickly post and leave and nobody clicks. Google hates the content to be honest and I have had more than 50K indexed pages without any clicks. And if there is click once in a while it gets paid the lowest in adsense even for the best niches. Just to give an idea. I used to manually moderate for a few days and then I was receiving hundreds of submissions every day and it is IMPOSSIBLE to manually moderate unless you are free for the whole day. And why would you anyways moderate if you don't make any money. Add to that, article directories are banged on by thousands of AMR users every day and they also screw up the server. Been done, done that and left that. Even the people whom I sold off all the directories later sold it off in a few months due to the same problems. LOL. Even the highest possible VPSes on HostGator were not working for them and they were running in massive losses. My advice would be to remain away from article directories unless you want to screw yourself up for the sake of other AMR users who would definitely spam it to death.

TIP! Best when building never to put links on FORUMS let G see you are serious with quality original content then the G robots will start indexing you all the time. When established back links will come in virally, then you can link almost anywhere as the resource is established including forums but first you need to get G robots behind you indexing away! GOOD LUCK

@TheSEOWizard, how did you try to monetize it? What Article Directory software were you using that wasn't working well for a high volume of posts? Did you get any natural search engine traffic at all? What alexa ranks did your 3 directories hit before you sold them off? Since you already sold em off, mind sharing what their PR was as well as selling price?

I'm considering starting a high volume (as in 100s) of article directories soon and would like to know what the pitfalls are regarding the software.

I have a few sites in a relatively small blog post exchange network (less than 1000 sites in the network). The network only accepts unique, non-spun content with Adsense friendly topics (no porn, etc). Each site only gets a handful of posts each day but together they make a nice chunk of change each month. Getting into something like this might be a better idea than making directories for AMR spam.

I have several article directories , both open without moderation and with moderation on.

The only one without moderation which did not get deindexed is on a 10 year old domain. All others deindexed within 4-6 weeks.

The ones moderated can't be moderated unless you have someone moderating it full time and the articles left over from the submissions after moderation and checking for duplicates is around 0.5-1% with the exception of higher pr moderated article directories of which around 4-5% of the submitted articles are 'good' enough to be posted.

As for traffic:
On the one without moderation it is around 300-400 visitors from SE daily.
( over 240.000 pages indexed in G )

I had a while one which brought over 10k daily from SE before it got deindexed.

As far the moderated ones ( which are not really actively moderated so only a few hunderd posts ) around 20-25 average visitors daily.

None of the Article directories are seo optimized so the amount of visitors can be increased, I just don't bother with all the work it takes.

My advise if you are serious about creating an article directory is to find PR 3 or higher domain and hire someone to moderate it and do basic seo . It can take a long time before you have enough 'quality' articles to really have decent traffic.

As for monetizing I am now trying out CPA with a content locker on the open directory to see if it converts as adsense is no option unless you want to get banned. On the moderated ones adsense ctr is around 1-1,5% of visitors from SE, don't forget most traffic is from bots to post articles so i don't count them in %.

@LBrown, I don't think running AMR directories in-and-of itself with onsite monetization would ever do it for me. I'm thinking ...

- exclusive access AMR directory network available for subscription only (i.e. pay $x amount of dollars a month for access to block of 20, 50, 100, 250 etc. functional AMR directories on different class-C IPs with differing templates

- push my own spins through the network to build "stock" niche pages with no outgoing links, then rent out per month once the stock is large enough (i.e. pay $500 per month rent to get your casino link on 10k poker/casino pages spread over 1k article directories).

- any niche I ever tackle, I already have tons of aged pages to push links to within that niche for instant ranking ability from aged pages

- actually SEO my own pages on article directories (i.e. automate backlinks from external AMR sites, scrapebox, xrumer) so that the article directories actually rank for stuff and gain high PR

Essentially, instead of everyone else pushing their own sites with hundreds of thousands of posts, I would be the biggest pusher of articles to the network. then I would include others for a fee (and to help diminish the footprint caused by using 1000 article directories for only self-serving purposes).

The less-than-1000 blog exchange network sounds really enticing ... I might PM you some time for info on it when I've got the time to focus on non-adult niches (darn sex toys get no respect hehe).

@easydab ... I was considering article directories that were subscription-only. There would be a certain set of rules (for instance, don't post "watch blah blah tv episode 20" and 5 minutes later post "watch blah blah tv episode 21") and other rules in place which I'm assuming would be followed under threat of having their paid-account banned from the network. I would also build the tools necessary that track all the posts of one person via the IP they posted from in case a massive retraction was necessary over all domains.

I'm hoping that would take care of the problem of low quality content, but then again I know there will most likely be some moderation necessary. I live in the Philippines I can train some workers here to monitor 24/7 if I need to, assuming it's profitable enough.

Hmm I'll have to think about on-site monetization. A content locker makes the network look cheesy which I wouldn't want to do if I were renting it out to AMR users, every template would be nice, clean and different. Was thinking adbrite or maybe kontra.

I managed some article directories a few years ago as well. After Panda hitting these content farm type sites pretty hard I'm not sure it's a good way to create a site like this and rely on the grace of Google... You're a lot better off creating a larger (100+ posts) unique content site that you're sure is high quality and more than likely won't get hurt with Google updates (there are exceptions unfortunately).

I use a simple free version and 242.000 pages indexed in G, 0 performance issues. But I run my sites from my own dedicated servers so I do not have to worry about other people crappy scripts/sites.
