Firefox has spent millions of dollars for developing such a free software. How does it make money?

Firefox is an example (which is a big company owned by Google); I mean smaller companies developing browsers from Opera to new browsers developed by few programmers.

How browsers (which are free software) make money?

By sponsors! Don't you ever wonder why the default homepage search engine is Google?
Google pays a lot of $$$ for that .... And that's just one sponsor! And believe me they have a lot of sponsors!

They made 97 million last year just from referral google searches from within the browser.

I feel the need to correct you. FireFox is not owned by Google, however they do have an agreement that allows FireFox to use searches in the address bar to be treated as searches within Google. Mozilla is the company that owns FireFox. Mozilla has been making browsers for ages, and is the predessor of Netscape Communications Corporation.

They earn money from for example Google and from people giving away money. I prefer Google Chrome!

Thanks fellas! For Firefox is easy to have big sponsors; but what about small companies (as I asked). What is the motivation for small companies to design new browsers (lots of them are coming to the market day by day).

Yeah Firefox is not owned by Google.
The main earning of firefox is the default homepage of google.I think that is enough.

If you can develop a browser and it become successful, then there will be no need to go or search for advertiser\sponsor. They will contact you on there own. Moreover the problem of finding advertiser for your website will be rid of.
