I have a competitor running a cookie cutter ecommerce website in the same niche as me. In fact, he uses the exact same system, and has the exact same 50,000 products on his site with the same URL's and everything.

BUT... he shows 30,000 inbound links in yahoo site explorer and I only have 8000. Upon further research, all of his inbound links are his OWN PAGES on that site! They aren't even from other domains.

What am I missing? I do internal linking as well, but I just can't figure out what he did to get all those showing as inbound links??

Well that's the other thing. This tricky bastard has a GREAT sitemap. The funny thing is, this service we use does NOT provide a sitemap creation tool, and if you set out to crawl your site, their servers will block you. The only thing i can guess is that he's using a froogle export which they provide and sucking the URL's out of that. I really don't know though!

the above sitemap generator is limited to 100 pages I think (don't get me wrong, it's good, but if you got a ecommerce site you'll have more pages than that)

Try this one
Code:
http://www.freesitemapgenerator.com/
. Sometimes thet queue you for a day or so but it's unlimited as to numbers of pages

(And take a hint from your competitor - internal linking can be VERY powerful)

Thanks guys... but those generators have limitations. One does only 500, the other only 5000. We have roughly 50,000 product pages not to mention all of the category pages and other special pages.

I've tried RAGE sitemap generator for Mac and it finds so many pages that it crashes the app.

Just looked at xml-sitemaps again and I actually used that script a few years ago from a remote domain and it would crash about 1/2 way in. I have no way of running it from the domain my site is on because it's a remotely hosted ecommerce system owned by a 3rd party.

get your pages indexed. he got more pages indexed than you. :)

:( I just checked their site and it says:

"At this time we cannot spider more than 5,000 URLs per site."

That's disappointing. :(

Are you sute that they have only links from their website?
I can check them with my tools if you like.
pm me with url and I will give you a few his BLs. Meaby you will be able to put your bl there.

Why not build your own non-xml sitemap, just a page with your links on it? If your pages are indexed, they're easy to grab with SB.

Why don't you just grab his sitemap and change the links?

Now that's quite a clever idea - use the replace function to replace the piece that changes between his site and yours. It should be the same piece for each page.

if he has so many inbound links - check if there are links in footer / sidebar etc - to generate them on every single product page.

30 000 product pages with one link = 30k links :D
