We mainly used the white hat techniques as our employer was throwing in huge amounts of cash into link buying. Since then I also had a couple poker rooms which are in top Russian serps now.
The only factors that hinder my success in the .com sector is the fact that I am not native English-speaker and basically lack of time.
Last year I started building own online poker project which has proven to be more or less successful considering it was dealing with low-paying Russian traffic of poker players.

The main problem that I encountered so far is the low quality of Russian traffic. Russian users' budgets are significantly lower than that of the western markets. My partner poker rooms are more than willing to offer bigger deals knowing about my experience but they will do it for .com traffic only.
With this post I want to find an SEO-savvy partner who can take care of the optimized content (we can start with niche (longtail) articles, SERPs and traffic for the English site while my team would be taking care of the partner deals, promotions, support and community management.
