So if I understand correctly I should do the following?
1) Register a new Gmail account.
2) Scrape a few hundred (ok a thousand) urls from serp related to my niche.
3) Visit each URL (automated of course).
4) +1 myself

This was my thought as well, this logic would be flawless but... I am guessing that Google would be imposing some kind of "cap" per +1.

*The following is purely base on speculation*

Lets say that each +1 is given a value of 1 to 10 depending on its quality. "1" being "not related", "5" being "ok" and 10 being "great". Now lets suppose that you are the hardcore type of gamer and you surf the web for gaming stuff day long. You find a website and you click on the "+1" button, they record it with a '10' ranking.

Now the second part, if you are surfing on purpose for site related to your niche, would be that you use proxy and hammer +1 on your site like crazy, right?

Well, keep in mind that your browser in itself contains data about your PC. Data which, surely, Google access and record. How do you think there is website everywhere that can tell your IP/Browser/OS you are using? Its because all those data are stored. I'm sure that it can get even worse with what they kept record about your PC. Now if they receive 100 +1 from PC which have the same characteristics... Do you think it will be hard to detect? Not at all!

Its just my 2 cents and purely speculation. If Google could make the perfect marketing system with its search engine by gathering data, I don't think that they'll get fooled easily by stuff like this.

But hey, I say you should give it a try anyway and let us know what happened!

Interesting case study, especially the "Green" test.

What sort of SERP changes did you see?
I may have overlooked this, but I'm assuming that most of these accounts had very little preexisting qualities since they were somewhat new?

I'm curious if "super" G+ accounts would have more emphasis on rankings as a result of a share. By super I mean accounts that have larger followers/circles but don't follow back and/or are very engaged with content, sharting, etc.
