Ranking 301 Redirect Domains?

In your opinion, do you think there is a point in ranking domains that 301 redirect to another website... is it even possible to rank those domains? (i.e., by posting backlinks and such). I ask this because my 301 redirect domain has a vital keyword for me, what do you think?

Try it and see. Most likely the site at #20 will pop up at #3 or higher within a week or so. I've had very good experiences with all of my 301 experiments but others have not so the only way to know is to try it.

yeah, i have good experience with 301 too. in less than a week, you can see major changes on your site. even if unrelated sites, the trust and authority will be passed on the sites you have been redirected.

If oldsite.com/keyword1 is ranking for a specific keyword and you want newsite.com/keyword1 to rank for the same keyword then you should do a page to page redirect for each applicable page. If that is not the case redirecting the old homepage to the new homepage will be sufficient.

I'm confused though... do you have to develop the 301 redirect domain and rank it before you redirect it or can you redirect it and THAN rank it? It's confusing because according to the search engines, that domain has been permanently been moved to a new one (thus the 301 redirect), so will it still rank that domain :S?

Backlinks -> 301 redirects -> money site.


The redirects pass link juice, just not as much as what you would get building links directly.

So i have a .net site that has been in sandbox for 6 months. I just snapped up the exact match .org after it got dropped and wonder if i transfer the content to the new domain how long to wait before doing a 301 redirect to the new domain? Straight away or wait a few weeks?

In my own experience it takes pretty much the same place. Of course it depends on the competition at the top. I'll be 301ing a domain in a week or two so I'll be happy to update the thread then.

It doesn't matter which way you do it. I have built links to an already 301'd domain and we got the target domain to #3 in google. No links were built to the target, and the 301 was in place before we started link building.

In this case I'd be tempted to do a page by page redirect so you can monitor the progress more closely. So move the content over and 301 one of the permalinks, then add more after monitoring movement.

It's not much to go on due to client constraints, but for what it's worth:

domain being ranked:
KW1 2nd

domain being forward to:
KW1 7th

301 is now in place, I will update when I see results.

I'd have liked to have ranked the other two keywords and got all three to number one but alas time was against me.

thats gr8. what do u think about redirecting non related domain to money site, i have an old domain which is ranking well. but that site is no more profitable. i am now working on new site and thinking to redirect this old domain which got tons of links to new domain.do you think this will pass authority to new domain and i will be able pass the initial dull period of ranking?

My 301s are built specifically with the correct anchor text that I would build anyway. By redirecting a non related site you will rank for non related keywords.

That said, I have also seen sites where there overall ranking increases just because one or two keywords were ranked, so I'd be interested to see your results

So i have about 10 sites with the same hosting company and I tried to do a 301 redirect on one of them and apparently it affected all of my sites. DId this happen to anyone else? I had to remove the redirect than revert the files back a few days to make sure everything is ok. I ended up losing quite a bit of rankings, hopefully they come back tomorrow.

Apparently it has something to do with sub folders or sub directories.

(My motivation for the questions is that I have found more than one pretty good keywords with matching EMDs for the same niche. I thought buying both would be good, but want to build a single authority style rather than manage two or more nearly identical sites. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.)

That is very strange. Are you hosted on linux and did you use a .htaccess to redirect?

The reason I do it is insurance against a client not paying. If they don't pay, I pull the 301 and they lose ranking.
