One of the websites in my link pyramid went PR4 immediately after being indexed. The only link to this website is a crappy forum sig link, which I only used to get the site indexed in the first place. There are only 2 pages indexed. How can this PR4 be explained? The site is a fortunecity subdomain which had never been used before I used it.
Site went PR4 overnight, with no backlinks. WTF?

Check with http://checkpagerank.net to make sure that it's valid PR, not a fake one.

If your providing some information the G was looking to index and your the only one that hit the mark on content in your niche. This isn't the first time I heard of this happening, this also happens in the Mobile Apps niche if you provide quality content to your readers.
Sadly it has never happened to me

Until someone shows proof of it, I don't believe it at all. Pagerank is supposed to be almost entirely based on other pages linking to your page.

So do you have any example to show us? Or did it just happen "To a friend of a friend of yours"? Any proof? Years of experience tell us that isn't possible, especially since Pagerank usually updates in waves, and not just instantly for 1 website, as soon as it is indexed, without any backlinks, just based on a few pages of content.
It is a free hosted subdomain "mywebsite.fortunecity.com". Never been used before, as far as I can tell. The domain wasn't indexed before I picked it up, and there's no history in waybackmachine.
This website is just one small piece of my link pyramid. Right now it is ranked way above my money site - it's position 10 out of 1.7 million results.
