So what about the stories that you can lose your domain if they catch you with fake whois info ? Like the ones godaddy tells in their whois update reminderr emails ?

Register with real info so you won't have problems with the registrar, then once it's registered (minutes after) change it to fake.

So far every provider I used allows you to change the info through their panel.
Takes about 2-24 hours for the new info to appear in new whois lookups.

you may even stretch it this far as to register it to a fake company. you may even go and create one, either way the info will never trace back to you DIRECTLY which is what we want.

I do this too, but I do wonder sometimes if it could come back to haunt me in any way. Mostly I don't think it would unless the authorities were involved in any way, and for whitehat there's no reason they would. For blackhat, there's the slimmest of chances - usually the punishment for getting caught blackhatting most of the things you see on BHW you just get delisted or your adsense account closed.

Also, a couple people recommended namecheap for free first year privacy - really that's the best you can do? Like someone else said, go with a registrar that gives free permanent whois privacy. internet.bs and 1and1 (both mentioned above) both do this as far as i know, but seriously? f**k 1and1! they blow - hard.

That means the poster above is right - you don't get free privacy from them except the first year. It's bait and switch my friend. Don't fall for it. Read the posts above and you'll see there are plenty of providers who give you free *permanent* private whois. Do a G search and you'll find plenty more. Don't be lazy

just note that it is hard to sell a domain with fake whois details so make sure they are correct when you go to sell them

I would also add that it may scare some customers off. If you re not selling anything on the site, then it's just the same what you use. Scammers intend to hide behind Po boxes etc.

Remember also, it's agains IANA's ToS to enter false data. If it's your money site, I would try to play as fair as I can. So in worst case, they make takover your domain for entering false registraration information.

That's what I do if it's something blackhat that I don't want to be connected with. The only site that has my name on it is my business site, but that deals with offline clients as well so hiding would be idiotic!
