penalized for duplicate content?

just out of curiosity, how can you tell if your site is getting penalized for duplicate content? Lets say this is a site 3-6 months old that has slowly but steadily been climbing in the rankings.

There is no duplicate content filter.

The way it works is if you and ten others have the same content, it then moves on to other factors to rank the site such as backlinks. That is why good quality backlinks are better than just a bunch of crap backlinks.

Also if your content is exactly the same but you make sure your on page SEO is correct, you could possibly beat the other sites just with that. But still get quality backlinks or someone will pass you.

Yes, this is true, cause you can even have original content and still does not rank for it.
