If .com .net .org are gone, I usually find a different keyword that's available if possible.
ie computers.com is taken, try applecomputers.com, then you try to rank for both keywords.
Another tip, which is my own opinion, is try to find a cheap domain in your niche via auction that is aged.
I bought a two word keyword via auction with a dash, ie key-word.com, for $300, which I kinda later regretted because I'm not a big fan of dashes after doing some experimenting. But anyways, I put about 10 pages on this domain, and all are ranking pretty well. Take a look. The one ranking #18 has 30,000 exacts per month which I never even tried to rank for, and the one ranking #33 has 150k exacts per month, which I just recently started to try and rank.
The #1 at 4,400 exacts per month is the key-word.com site.
