Need SEO help

Here is the scenario....

I am quite a newbie at all this SEO and backlinking scenario but my friend has
given me a website to try and get ranked for him.

Its a wordpress shop scenario, after having a quick look I am uncertain on what
to do with it ( I personally think the layout is shit).

My initial thoughts were to do on site SEO etc but I now get the feeling I should
just blast the shit out of it and build backlinks all over the place.

so was wondering if one of you guys could look at it for me and tell me

Well you said u are noob with SEO and in most cases someone like you is not starting SEO journey with a shop. On site optimization its kinda tricky so if you wanna learn something blast the website and see results. Again do that just to learn , test etc...

About the blast, the domain need to be old, if not build web 2.0 prop. around him. Dont know what to tell you more, just keep in mind that this is a test website...

Firstly, I wouldn't touch the site if I was you unless you know what you're doing.

If I was you I would:

- Firstly read up on all the seo stuff you can and soak it in (it's not as difficult as people make out).
- Then work on the on page stuff to make sure everything is on point.
- Then blast the shit out of it with links. You want links such as web 2.0 link pyramids, articles, press release, some blog comments, video's etc, so you get a balanced link profile.

That was my first thought to run senukex campaign with unique content to build some profiles, then
blast the crap out of them with scrapebox not to heavy at first.
Its the first time I have dealt with a shop scenario.

Do you think I should maybe pull it down and put a better SEO friend theme in
its place and nicer and more functional to boot ?

Layouts not bad. Product descriptions are a bit thin, so it might be a good way for you to learn some keyword research. Find out what people are searching for when they want to buy a large red pashmina (such as the cloth it's made from or a descriptive term like funky pashmina) and modify those.

If you are leaving the theme do something with the URLs, might not make a difference for search engines but I believe it does for customers.

Its not about wp theme, its about the 'shop' ideea. First you need to do onpage SEo , then you must think a plan for the rest, but as i was saying SEO for shop is for someone who actually knows what hes doin.

My opinion is to read some threads and then make a decision and since is ur friend's website you can make an experiment and see whats going on

Thats where I was finding the difficulty as in optimizing for H1 headers etc,
writing 400 - 500 word blurb somewhere etc
although I only had a quick look in all honesty.

If you are new to IM as per SEO is concerned then here are few suggested tips for you.

1) For a new bought domain first do on page SEO.There are many fuss that metatags play few role in SEO then I must say that a site with incomplete on page seo can hardly rank.Hence set properly the meta title (use some of the targted keywords to form a title ) + meta description (make a suitable description of 200 characters using some of the targeted keywords) + tags (use all the targeted keywords for which you want to rank the page)

2) Keyword selection is very important and you suggest you to got with a combination of moderate competitive as well as highly competitive Keywords.The moderate competitive keywords are easy to rank and hence it will give you boost to work for the highly competitive Keywords as well .

3)Quality profile link creation.Now you can start building Link on some high PR domains.I will suggest you to go for quality and not quantity hence opt for the .edu and .gov package for building links.Here in the forum you will find some good service thread on .edu and .gov packages as well as you will get a list of the forums shared by some good persons to start your seo work by your own.Now you can apply some strategy but not merely creating links but creating a link chain so as to double enhance the SERP.Now the most important part is to index the profile links.You can use BMD its worth.

4)Article submission to renowned article directories with high DA plays another key role.Now the Articles that you are submitting has to be highly SE Optimzed with proper keyword density.I prefer 1.5 to 2% max.Remember to avoid keyword stuffing.

5)After this go for higher Link building strategies.Link Wheel, Link pyramid etc.Again you will find some good service here in this forum.

These basic seo tips. Hope it will help you but one thing I would like to mention that try using minimal bots on a newly bought domain as it might create negative effect instead of bringing smile on your face.

Both, but mainly keywords. Pop the item in google keyword tool and harvest anything relevant.

I wouldn't change the theme just for H1s personally, I manage a retailers site without and we're climbing steadily. I use Joomla but I'm sure wordpress has similar things, we can have reviews which add to content on the page and also customers tend to drop keywords in for us.

URLs, I think most customers will remember yoursite.com/silver-fascinator but not yoursite.com/page=119

think like others have said learn the basics. On site seo is very important efore you blast. say google wants to rank you for your keyword with a lack of on site seo and keyword targeting its going to get random search engine traffic if you lucky. fix the site up first change the layout, do keyword research check the competition of the keywords. there is a lot to explain so i suggest you read up on the basics.

Make a few trackable changes to the site and wait and see for the results. If you make a large number of changes all at once it would be extremely difficult for you to keep track of which change produced which result. Watch, wait and learn.SEO in no rocket science and won' take up much of your time.
