I actually wrote a post about choosing a website name yesterday on my blog, Sofa Moolah. I'd say get creative: think of Dropbox as an example. When Dropbox wasn't available they decided on GetDropbox. Sure, you might lose traffic but it's better than changing your name entirely or having random numbers and letters in the domain. Use Dropbox as inspiration - get creative.
I agree with proxified. Adding a relevant word to the end of the domain name is the best. Adding an adjective to the beginning is OK too but it is a little better to have your main keyword at the beginning of the domain.
