Why did Google shorten my website title?

I just checked today and my website title is only 4 words now. It used to have like 12 words in the title listed in the Google results. Why did Google do this?

Seo tools recommend that you have up to 70 chars in title including the spaces

live when i search for certain keywords. Other keywords I search it shows the full 12 words in the page title but I'm afraid Google might drop me for certain keywords

It happened to me too. you got nothing to worry about in this. When I search my site with the company say "xxxx company" it shows my home page with title just "xxxx company" .

But my title tag is clearly different from it. It doesnt reduce any rank.

In my experience it switched back.

Google doesn't want to see more than 65 characters in the title of any site so it drops of the extra characters and adds "...." at the end that shows some characters have been dropped off due to lack of space.

Also, if you are in the open directory project, G can pull your title info from there. Adding the meta tag noodp will use what you have specified on your site.

I observed that Google is doing this for new URLs which it indexes. After a week or so, it displays the full title and description
