It helps in SERPS for low competition keywords(tested in a golf niche)..This is mainly to increase your pr and back link count.

They are do-follow, like I said before it adds up in webmaster tools and siteexplorer(after 2-3 months).

I did exactly that. But no window popped-up.!

THis happened to me at first, add the site again then the credential box will pop up and there is a place to add keywords. I had to give no script temporary permissions.
