I live in Canada, and I want to start a watch free movies online type of site but I hear it's really risky if I upload the movies to my own server..how can I avoid the trouble?

It's risky even if you just link to movies hosted elsewhere. You are making the copyright infrangement available for more people, you can't really hide beyond the "I wasn't hosting, just linking" thing.

Some people are having bad times with the law for this very reason.

Dont be discouraged, you are not the 1st person to do this, why not find a host somewhere else like Russia,turkey and other country that done care about copyright.
you can always backup ur database every-week incase your host or government seise your files. there are couple of host that allow you to host any kind of file, plus copyright and the owner of the file too LOL.

I have a script that does it all...you don't want to host your own movies that's not a good idea

1. Don't host your own movies, that's a bad idea
2. If you're going to host your own movies, at least do it out of the country or in a place where you can't be touched
3. IF you have friends or family, don't host movies -- it's a bad idea (didn't I already say that?)
4. If you link to it and it's curated by you, then you can't hide behind any DMCA safeharbor rules -- if you don't know what the DMCA is you're already waiting to get screwed

Create your own upload site, and about 1000 accounts behind an anon screen. Then upload to your own site via these accounts, as well as opening it up to other account holders to submit links. Follow all of the DMCA guidelines including a removal link. If you host via another site, link to theirs, if not, follow through on your own. If a link gets removed via DMCA compliance, just fire up another account and reupload. Get it to the point through UPLOAD promotion that the only thing you do is insert ads. Download a BU regularly and host elsewhere, using a 301 redirect for a quick switch out in case of banning. If you need a good host, the go with TPB's host (forget the name, slightly pricey, but very DGAF (dont give a F) in the copyright arena.

When all is said and done, you have the framework for a legit social site, and the whole DMCA is just an unneeded risk in the end.

Your other option is a install codec site, with no actual vids involved.

Oh and guys..Isn't DMCA only U.S laws? I live in Canada..and so if I buy a host lets say in sweden where they don't really care about stuff like this, would I still be in trouble?

Even if you did host your own movies once you get around 4-5k uniques aday you wont be able to afford the bandwidth costs of those movies...So just forget it unless you find a way to host them somewhere else!

I'm not concerned with that..when you put your mind to something anything is possible.

I just need to be clear about the DMCA rules..and if DMCA is associated with Canadian rules..

i wanted to start one for myself too,
i saw one wich is running in my country and they put up just TV shows and its like 5EUROS/month for a premium subscription and its a big success

if u dont get premium u have to wait 30 mins between vids

The streaming movies category is under a lot of governmental pressure right now. It's the most frequent copyright-related issue discussed in the US Congress.

My advice - stay away!
