Youtube geolocation

Hi,

If I upload videos from a server in Germany for example, are the uploaded videos set automatically to Germany location ? And if the users from Germany search for the keywords which match my videos, do you think that the local uploaded videos will be ranked first compared to videos which also match the keywords but uploaded from another country ?

That's an interesting question. Being based in the U.S. myself, I do believe that any uploaded videos may, by default, be listed as having originated in the States. BUT...you can manually set the video's location by entering into the "Edit Video" section and adjusting accordingly.

I would be interested to hear if anyone has an answer regarding rankings and if your IP has anything to do with this. We might use this thread to compare what ranks at the top for particular keywords in different countries and see if this is different. If no one knows the answer, that might be the best solution to finding out. I'll be the American if anyone wants to give this a go. Just let me know the keyword.

The answer is YES.

BUT, on the bottum of the page there is something like this "Location: Worldwide" click and select the location you want, after that you will only see videos uploaded from users on that location, appart of that if that option is not selected you will see only worldwide.

For whatever reason, I never noticed that before!

I just played with it, however, and am seeing the same search results regardless of the country I have chosen (I tried selecting something very American - for example "Chicago Cubs baseball" - and set my location for Egypt...where there isn't likely to be a lot of Cubs baseball highlights uploaded). I had assumed that the results would be near Zero. But, no...plenty of Cubs baseball highlights.

I wonder, does YT revert back to WorldWide results should nothing be found in your selected country?

EDIT: I may have answered my own question. I searched the YT forums for this topic and discovered a great deal of confusion. Apparently all this feature at the bottom of the page does is sort the FEATURED/SPOTLIGHTED videos by Country. So, in my example above, I would see Featured content, when available, from Egypt on my search query. If there are no such videos available, it will revert to WorldWide. Also, I would see the most popular videos in Egypt on my Home Page. My search results, however, would be the same anyone else with any other country selected.

So, the question still remains - would the search results be different by Country based on the user's IP? I'm thinking the answer is 'No' - it would be the same. But, let's check:

In the U.S. - the top search results for "world finance" is:

1. WORLD FINANCE LEADERS WARN OF UNCERTAINTY
2. World financial crisis is a "catch 22"
3. Made in Germany | World Financial Crisis: Is there Hope for the Stock Markets
4. A Message From Babaji - World Financial Crisis

Perhaps I can't rank on the first page for "World Finance" in the U.S. - but can my video for the same keyword rank on the first page for Italian users, for example? Sure, I might need to hire some Italian uploaders to achieve this but, depending on the keyword, it might be worth it. I've never seen this topic discussed before.

Thanks for the answers. I think Youtube search might follow the same logics as Google search, and when you do a search in Google from the specific country Google favors first the local advertisers, it is quite normal and much more interesting for the advertisers and Google, so I think the geolocation plays an important role in the keywords ranking, and probably same thing for Youtube. As you said you can change it manually on the youtube page, but I am not sure Youtube will detect automatically the location with the IP and sets automatically the attribute location into the uploaded videos, it should normally
By the way I will do a few tests but I need some proxies from foreign countries. But I think the answer is YES too.

Definitely let us know what you come up with. I wouldn't use proxies, though, for the test. YT is likely to kick your video out as they don't like 'em.

In order to make it work, first of all we have to ensure that the right location is set properly int the videos, if youtube can set it automatically it's great otherwise you can set it programmatically.

Looks like our initial assumption was correct: results are the same the world over.

Oh well. It was worth investigating. At least future BHW users smart enough to use the search feature will discover the answer should they also be curious!
