[Super Geeks Question] - Intel i5 vs i7 for running automation software?

I was wondering which processor to go for cause I need to run

- AMR (multithreading, 40 threads?)
- SEnukeX (multithreading, now socket based, don't know how many threads?)

SPEED is the main concern here.

I understand that the i7 is best for running multiple programs all at once cause it has the most cores.

Question is...

Is the i7 faster than i5 when it comes to running AMR and SEnukeX individually?

PS: Cost is not a problem.

PPS: Internet connection is fast and not a problem.

The i7 will be faster in all cases, each of those programs run individually will create multiple threads, each of these threads can run on individual cores. With Hyperthreading in theory it can run even more (2x cores).

If cost is a big deal, I'd go with the i5, it isn't going to be huge difference but if you really need the speed of an i7 you should be making enough money that the cost is insignificant.

Just get one of them, stop worrying about stupid stuff, and get to work!

This was the info I needed to confirm.

Lol, it's not stupid stuff.

Cause this will be a laptop.

And we all know we hardly change laptop hardware after the purchase.

Now I know i7 affects the threading thing speed. Cause AMR is running very slowly on my Pentium E2160 here. Almost 1 hour for 1 submission to 1500 article directories.

Depends on the I7 because there is an I7 six core out, and there is a basic I7 huge performance difference. The best I5 is better than the worst I7. Depends on what you can afford
 
I assume that you internet connexion will able to follow your CPU ;)

And honestly, if you handle to pass the 13% of your CPU capacity from a I5 or I7, well done ;)

We do not know your budget though and how important money is to you. Either way, there is typically a point in all computer technology cycles where you get the most CPU for the least amount of money. At one point the i7 920 was it, not sure what it is currently but if you look through the prices you will find one that stands out as the best value for the money. It usually isn't the cheapest, look about 80% up the line. For example if 10G was the best, usually 8G would be about 80% as fast for 50% of the cost.

Laptops are sleds anyway you look at them, their hard drives are so slow the cpu doesn't matter much. AMR does depend on decent disk speed as it writes out a bit. It shouldn't be that big of a deal if you have a drive that has a cache as it isn' t a lot of data but you want a 7200 RPM drive minimum. Laptops biggest issue is their hard disks, if you can get an SSD that will help a lot.

Granted the tasks you are running are mostly CPU bound (and to some degree memory if you have less than 4GB) but on a laptop the hard drive is such a huge factor no matter what you are doing.

Anyway, look about 80% up the line and that should put you near the best buy. Hard to really give you a better answer without knowing your budget, how important money is to you, and what each model offers.

I think you can figure it out from that though.
 
Honestly? You don't need those 2 processors for the stuff you just wrote!
An $50 worth of processor can handle all that and even more.
 
winchester is correct. how many gigs of memory do you plan to use? If I were doing some complex automation I would be looking at the i7-2600K model with at least 6gb of ddr3. May be overkill but I'd rather have too much power than too little...

I can hit the cpu pretty hard with AMR alone, but then again running the amount of threads I do is pretty insane. I run other tools as well, but I agree cpu isn't that big of a deal unless you are really doing some insane work with it. If that is the case, this is a stupid conversation as the money is insignificant, unless of course your technique sucks.

I'm with an i3 and there's no problem running my softwares ( amr,scrapebox and senukex )
 
Just go big and get in on a Dell R710
64gb of ram is nice..reeeeeal nice

Answer: Yes, the i7 would be faster.

But some i7s are not faster (as they are released for desktops only)

So see this benchmark before buying a i7 720 920 or whatver it is.

should have gotten two desktops with 6 core 1100Ts and 16gb/each (would have also been cheaper)

If you have fiber (at the very least) you prob could have ran 30 scrapebox instances at once between those two comps
