How important are unique IP addresses?

How important are unique IP addresses for SEO? I have several sites and wondered if someone could help me better understand the importance of having a unique IP for each site.

It stems from the idea of connected sites being as different as possible so as SEO efforts do not seem too synthetic and look more like natural linkbuilding.

It really only matters, if at all, when you've a large multiple of sites all hosted on the same server, and all are in some way inter-linking (e.g. 10/20/30 or more, although, some may debate on this and argue amounts of 100 or more, there's no real "exact figure", after all SEO is mostly theory).

What is the most cost effective way to put multiple (20 or more) sites on multiple servers?

There are hosting services that prominently offer multiple IP hosting but you need someone else to make an actual recommendation so consider this a bump.

Its important but some people are obsessive about it.

If you have most of your backlinks from the same IPs Google might raise a red flag.

But, you can have many backlinks from the same IP and nothing will happen. There are countries that their IP range is limited and Google knows it. Anyway, you should have IP diversity but you don't need to be obsessive about it.
