I recently bought some .edu backlinks on fiverr out of curiosity. I got a report that showed the links and it seems like they are mostly legit although many are no follow. The thing though is the majority of them have like 1,000 blog replies that are just pure spam. Its my understanding that no backlinks could hurt but how much do backlinks like these actually help? I'm no computer science master but theres no doubt that google could identify blogs that are being spammed. Do you think these links carry any weight at all? Or would it be a massive waste of time to post on these?

well when there is a .edu blog with 1438 replies all packed with url's its pretty easy to see that the blog has been spammed to fuck. I'd say the difference between a viral blog post and one that is just open to spammers is all about the %of links in the blog comments.
After my expirience every link counts. I have a site which was sandboxed because of some mistakes I made. Before 3 Months I started blog commenting on a regular base to this site and mostly to my own tier 2 which are pointing to this site. I did not care for follow and nofollow neither I did care if the blogs where spammed, or not or in which language these blogs where written.
Now my money site is back in serps, better than before when it got sandboxed.
My conclusion is blog commenting works, it's just a matter of quantity and continuity in your link building process.

do you think you were sandboxxed for spamming blog posts? from what i've read it seems like it only happens if you use some type of tool to blast like 10,000 forum posts in a day all from the same ip. i guess google would have to know it was the owner of the site being shady otherwise you could wipe out the competition pretty easily.
No, it did not do much link building before. I put some efforts to make my site faster. Seems there I made some major mistakes and the result was a loss of 500+ positions in SERPs. The site did not come back for more than 2 months and I stopped to put more efforts in this site. Then I bought Scrapebox and I thought it could not become more worst and started linkbuilding to this site. After 2 months my site was suddenly back on page 1 and it stays there. So far there is no geative impact from blog commenting. In the beginning i did small blasts to my money site and large blasts to my tier 2 sites. Now I blast 1000+ links per blast to my money site and everything seems to be ok so far.
