Adult content site - worth it anymore?

I feel like it's not even worth it to think about a membership based site anymore, Is there anything at all that can command a longer attention span and commitment on a month to month basis anymore??

There just seems like there's soooo much content for free. I feel like the train has left the station.

On that topic, WHY is there so much free stuff? Is it a loss leader to TRY to get people in the door? Are the only folks making money the one's taking the pictures/video?

I am a member of a few private forums / communities.
I stick with them as they offer a lot of value for the price they charge, they each offer something that for me, makes the monthly fee worthwhile.... something that is not available for free anywhere else... a unique selling point.

As for offering free stuff there are lots of reasons:

• link bait / SEO
• reputation / brand building
• freemium (give basic free, charge for add ons)
• selling related products

I think it really depends on what you are doing. I am a photographer/videographer and I shoot with every day average girls here in the 4 state area. I have stuck with shooting custom content for private collectors and have been thinking about expanding to shooting custom for web content, etc. Actually business hasn't been too bad. I just think it depends on what you are doing. I myself have stayed away from making a subscription based website because there is nothing I can do to set myself apart from the big boys other than providing true amateur content.

That's interesting because this is exactly the kind of content I'm looking for!

Actually, some free stuff is the key since it leads to other things. For example, a free content site may make their money from people clicking adult ads. Hope that makes sense.

membership sites are rough these days...it almost has to be a micro-niche to make money, and then the problem is traffic. i ran a toon/hentai site from 1997 through 2006 called Toonerotica...it was very successful at first, but I would never try it now.

It is 1000 times harder today than it was in the mid 1990's. Back then I ruled with free hosted blogs and a few content ( Free Porn Forum ) sites. It was nothing then to make $1000 a day or more. I just do not believe it can be done now. No way. But if you get real niche specific you can still make some decent $100.00 - $500.00 a day money.

But your going to have to get real niche specific. Try panties and build sites around those key words. Or wife sharing. There are you two that could still work with the right content and if you can teach yourself to pre-sell your porn.

It is now a real cut throat business and you have to be willing to do anything you can to rake in the money. If you have scruples then porn today is probably not for you.

But it was just too easy to make great money AND have scruples - I remember going out for a 60-minute consulting gig that paid me $90 --- getting home and seeing that I had 3 $35 signups while I was out --- and saying "why did I bother going out to work?" lol

Even the real niche specific stuff these days, you're going to have to work your ass off to make passable money at it. You can go to sharing sites and see more than enough to "do your business" - even if you're looking for midget lesbians or sex in chain mail

Like others said, the only real way to make money in the adult biz is with unique copyrighted content or amateur model sites.

There will always be a demand for special 'fetish niche' sites if you have the unique content. Can always start out on clips4sale . com and whore preview clips on the free youtube-esque sites and grow your empire from there.

As others said, the days of easy adult site profit is long gone.

For the naysayers, there is still garbage-sized trucks of money in online membership sites. Know what you are selling, and know who is buying it. Get both of those right, and you will bank. Yes, even in amateur sites.

And I've been running membership sites since 1999. If you have something unique, you'll do *better* than if you don't, theoretically. But we're very niched, and all of our members area stuff gets ripped and uploaded elsewhere as soon as it's posted. With niches, there are fewer potential members, so there's less potential revenue --- which leads me to say that most membership sites are on the way out in the next few years. Survival of VOD, yes. Membership sites, not likely.

I have a few adult affiliate sites. The money is not anywhere close to the way it used to be. If I didn't have some great domains with type in traffic and string ranking I would not get into it at all. But since I do I plan on developing about 40 more affiliate sites. Back in 2000 that would have been a great income now...no so much. But I have the domains and I can also sell other related products as well.

The problems is it's hard to get Adult SEO done. All of these great linking packages and no one want adult. I just screwed up a few of my sites with a stupid Fiverr gig that was a mistake.

I guess I'll have to do the link building myself or train and VA to do it for me. If anyone know of anyone that can manually build quality adult links for me at a cheap price link I can get non-adult PM me. If not I'll just odesk it.

I think it's a great time for the porn surfer. Yeah most are probably just dirty perverts but there are some of us who actually love the industry and love GOOD porn. If you skim back to pay sites in the 90s most of the content was half assed crap that any college dropout could do. Now it just doesn't sell if it's shit so some sites are struggling. Sites with good quality porn are doing extremely well however. To me, the milfhunter's porn work is always a great watch and casualteensexDOTcom as well. It's kinda like what happened when itunes store became mainstream. Artists realise they weren't gonna get away with filler tracks anymore. Take that industry!
