Did I get a pay raise?

I just started at a company and noticed that my paycheck is higher than my agreed upon salary. It seems odd that they would just give me more money without telling me? Of course, I don't want to inquire and have them "fix the bug". Does this happen? Would you start at a salary the have your employer give you more without mentioning it to you?

Also, I have a bonus that I haven't gotten.

Of course you have to say something, there will be a HR team to explain the whole paycheck to you probably. If they realise that they have indeed made a mistake at some point, they will most likely be entitled to pass you less on future payments to make up for it, I wouldn't wanna get hit with that a few months down the line.

What's the worst that can happen? You actually get the money that you accepted in first place? No doubt your boss would appreciate it too, if there has indeed been a mistake.

Somebody I worked with got a right old spanking for collecting extra money his bank was giving him due to some glitch. He almost ended up doing time over it. Not sure what the laws are in your country but here you can be accused of fraud if the sums are large enough for you to notice and you don't report it.

My boss gave me $80 more for a day of work and I called and told him. He was truly amazed that I did. It shows that your a trustworthy and honest person right off the bat, and that will probably help you out more in the long run.

I would talk to them and get it straighten out, you will not get to keep that money any way you look at it. When they figure it out, they will likely ask for it back or dock your current pay to balance it. If you refuse, you can be arrested.

There was a recent story of a guy getting $100,000 in his bank account, he spent it, and when they found out where it went they asked for it back. Because he couldn't produce it, he got jail time. He even offered to make payments to pay it back, but the owner of the money didn't want that.

could be due to your tax rate and payable tax adjustment from your last job.

Or you caught the company incremantal cost of living increase just as you started, most payrises occur after April and so timing wise it is likely this is the case as are the apportionment of annual bonus (check your contract to see if you are entitled to a bonus if not then deffo a balls up).

Yeah I started after April and yes I am entitled to a bonus (a year) which is about what I am being appropriated every month.

I thought it was a sign up bonus. Would I not get that then?

I would say you have caught the employees annual payments and rises period, it sometimes happens as they cant be arsed re-negotiating contracts especially if there is a potential for a widening of the salary bands between two people doing the same job.

See what you get next month, if it is the same...I wouldnt worry about it.

Can you work out if it is about 1-3% more than what you expected, if so thats typical cost of living increases, certainly in the uk

EDIT: also you should normally have formal notice of any increase as it pertains to your contract and terms of employment, most companies adhere to it by sending you confirmation (often after you have had some rise), if it is a small fry company or has a shit human resources you probably wont get one.

Not a small company. I never got one. The paycheck has been consistent for the last 3 pay periods but never got a notification.

My contracted salary + bonus is still less than I am getting now per month (and for the year).

I think you mean semi-monthly or bi-weekly since it sounds like you are getting more than one paycheck every two months.

Wouldnt know without seeing a contract and I am not asking you to post it up either! only you can judge wether it was a pro-rota payment or an annual bonus - sometimes it is levelled out through the year as performance related to keep you working all year as a motivator

It doesn't say in my contract. It just says the bonus to be given out at the discretion of my supervisor.

If my yearly salary is $10,000 (obviously it isn't) and my bonus is $2,000 (total compensation of $12,000 a year contractually), but now make roughly $14,000 now (with bi-weekly paychecks that figure out to be this yearly salary)

It seems to be higher than inflation and the bonus.

Not out of the question, but it seems I am getting compensated a bit more or better.

Should I ask my boss or a HR rep about how the bonus is divided up?

It's one thing if you're talking about finding a case full of unmarked bills. Your paycheck is a paper trail so you can't say that you didn't know about it once someone questions it. You know it will happen sooner or later, and it's always best to take care of these things sooner I say.

It isn't like its a ridiculous amount, its still reasonable and a reach of my contract. It's just more.
