dup content question

i have a doubt about dup content.not talking about blogs but about informational websites hmm take any random example hmm.... like Massachussets (MIT), if an informational website is to write about massachussets, how would he create a unique content ? i mean he can add some articles on his own which are unique but he cant change the facts.massachussets was established in this this, offers this this courses, fees etc. etc. how can this all be unique

The MIT is an established website, in age and backlinks. These things offset potential dup content penalties. It's mostly new sites that have to worry about dup content perception.

domain age: 3 years
previous content: none


current content:
autogenerated dupe content using own script that does the following:
- checks rss feeds of 8 sites currently
- as soon as new content appears it actually grabs the whole content from these sites ( not just rss data but actually grabs the whole post/article images etc )
- post content to site

results:

100-300 uniques per day from google

adsense ctr is around 0.5% ( bad niche )

Income is near zero, but looks like it's working to some extent.

The domain is actually old, but had no previous content.

I think if you grab the content really fast, it works. But as soon as I stop the script and post no new content traffic drops dramatically. The sites I copy the content from has much more authority and have natural links coming in, so it's understandable.

So according to this test dupe content can work if you keep on posting and posting real fast.

It's kinda like autoblogging but the content is not spun/crappy but totally high quality 100% dupe.

Don't know what to expect on the long run but testing is key.

Duplicate content is a myth. I have autoblog sites that are 100% duplicate content that get hundreds of unique visitors a day. If you look at any news site they are full of duplicate content and yet their duplicate content stories rank in Google.

Duplicate content is not a myth, and it is one of the few things which Google actually releases information about. They hate DC, and if your site is using it you will get hammered for it.

All these replies in this thread and not a single person has mentioned canonical urls which is in fact the correct way to deal with duplicate content and ensure that you dont suffer a penalty because of it.

what abt ezine and articlebase (although was hit by panda but i can still see it ranking no. 1 for soem copied articles )

edit - another thing i want to ask if that particular result is ommitted for serps or entire domain is penalised for copying ? what if a site has a mix of some unique articles and some copied content..

That is because they are doing it properly using canonical urls!

If you have more than one page on your website which has duplicate content. You have to make a decision....which is the authority content.

I'd love to paste an example but BHW will alter it and make it look terrible.

Basically there is a small piece of code to insert into you page header which tell Google the URL of the authority version of your duplicate content.

Just google "canonical code".

Its actually detailed on the official Google webmaster blog, where they describe the importance of using them; here

I'd have to agree with biscut. It's not a myth, but its not what people think. Duplicate content penalties come from duplicate results on your own site, not from two different sites that have the same article or content.

Pretty much my experience. I have a PR4 site with about 40% dup content.

I did read a post a while back that said dup content WITHIN your site was worse than scraped content. But I digress....

The problem that you face is, if Google does pick up on duplicate content, you might not get a ban, but your rankings could fall. However, you will never know the reason for this fall, and Google will not tell you. Alternatively, if you were to get a ban, which is very unlikely, sometimes you might get an email from Google but it would be very rare.

At the very worst, I would recommend you either spin the words round, so they are not duplicated. Alternatively, make an image of the copied text, and place that on the website. You could also make the duplicated page as no index, no follow, and then get rid of it from your XML and HTML sitemaps.

Just a few ideas!

Personally I do not think you would be penalised, but I have seen it happen, but it doesnt happen very often in my opinion.

Creating fresh content does not mean creating a new piece of article every time. If your content is appreciably similar to someone else's, that will be marked as duplicate content.

You can't change facts and figures but you can rephrase them to make them look unique.
