Tablet Replacing Laptop

Hey guys,

Has anyone switched to one of the current tablet PCs or made an attempt?

I thought about using e.g. IPad (or any similar pad) in combination with a VPS, which would allow me to do the work directly in the browser but also run programs using Linux, Windows etc.

Besides typing without a keyboard, any other potential problems that you can see?

What do you think?

For me, surfing the web on a tablet is easier, but typing anything is much harder. Being that the keyboard isn't physically there and is only 2 dimensional it makes it hard to type. Until someone devises a way to fix this problem I don't see tablets going any farther than blu-ray dvds did.

tablets are great for consuming information - read an ebook or watch some video training etc.
But for any sort of production work a PC is esential. (or mac if your that way inclined, though i cant imagine why..)

Tablets are still way slower compared to laptops. Get a lappie instead. Yeah it's nice to run VPS with iPad 2 (i think it's smart move!) but you will find it a bit hard to type there. Touch screen keyboard is never comfortable enough. Maybe you want an asus transformer, not sure how good it is, but it has a dock keyboard with extra battery

iPad is good for reading pirated ebooks on the couch but that's about it. You can't touch type on a tablet!

I have had a chance to play on an iPad and its awesome! When it was released, I was not too bothered about it, but after using it for a few hours, like many products from Apple, I find it works really well for what it is. As to whether its suitable for your needs, is another matter.

The touchscreen keyboard on a iPad works well but like others have mentioned, its not ideal for a lot of typing. If you're planning on doing simple tasks like logging into a wordpress blog, writing a post and uploading an image you will find it a chore. With the keyboard, you have to press a button for it to appear and disappear - doing this each time you want to type becomes tiring.

General surfing on the internet is great! If you are in a position where you simply email tasks/instructions to outsourcers, then it could work out, but don't expect to be doing a lot of simple administrative/linkbuilding work easily compared to have a real keyboard and bigger screen.

The Kindle is even better for that purpose.

I travel a lot and that's why I thought about a tablet. Initially, I was looking for a laptop but most of them are either too large, heavy or expensive.

Get a Android-powered tablet and a USB Keyboard. Problem solved.
