Hi if i was to straight up copy content from a competitor in a top 10 position and import his content to my wordpress blog, will google penalize the duplicate content on my website?

You can't be sure but I would say probably.

It depends how long after he posted it that you took it. In all fairness, they might not penalize you but you won't be ranking as high as he is by any means.

I wouldn't just copy and paste it, you won't rank as good as your competitors. What you can do is use a program like The Best Spinner to spin the article. That program costs money, but this one is free:

Whats the point of copying other peoples content, i mean people are just getting plain lazy with their online ventures.
Someone stole my content off an article directory and put it on an article blog without proper backlink credits, and all i did was complain to the blog owner and i got their website link deleted and mine put in its place.
Its just annoying that people can't be arsed to even change the articles into something more original. I wish Google did penalize sites, but who says which website is showing the first original draft?

This is not true Umee my guru always thought me lesson whatever you do, do it in smart way rather than blindly you can copy content or you can say just get an idea from his/her content and copywrite that content you will surely find you in Top 10.

Sod all that, the real question should be, if you change the date stamp will Google be even a little bit confused? 
I know the answer before was all that mattered was who got indexed yet, but as far as I know noone has done an experiemnt to see if thats the case in panda.
(OP what were you thinking though? If that worked that's all everyone would be doing and there would only be one piece of content on the entire internet)

Its a simple case of first one to get indexed.
In terms of date stamp.....thats a new one to me......care to expand?

On wordpress you can change the date something was published It's meant to be used to schedule posts, but you can also use it to make a post look older than it actually is (or use it to hide a post behind all your other posts)

the reason for the op is that i am creating a ton of different pages and posts using wordpress. my feeling was that aside from backlinks, the amount of pages on my website all linking to each other was also going to be a game changer? so i suppose the follow up question i have is: does the amount of pages a website have impact its ranking?

).@ OP======> f you're going to be uploading tons of wordpress blogs, why not combine what you're doing with a scientific case study? Not only will you learn something valuable about how Google treats/detects duplicate content in the post Panda era, but you'll gain TONS of rep and thanks by posting the findings here! (alternatively make an SEO blog and use that to post your findings, could possibly get some healthy traffic)

Clearly Mcdonalds would be a better job for you... This way you can copy everything everyone does right down to washing the chicken mcnugget trays and following the big mac preparation directions. Shoot, I bet they will even let you take a copy of that home with you...
