I'm messing with Charon, getting familiar with how to use it and have some questions.

Under "Check Proxies", what does it mean to "leech pages for more proxies" ? What pages? I thought proxies were IP Addresses, and not web-pages. How does this work?

It means going to sites that list proxies and getting those lists.

Charon is ancient like almost any other software in this field so don't expect that the sites in the default list still exist. The program is getting its parameters from simple text lists, all these .INI. You can open them with notepad and try to make heads and tails thereof or just use it to simply scan your proxy list without much effort.

in simple words its scraping proxies from a list of urls , like if u have some urls which u visit daily for good working proxies and gather proxies from urself then u will feed charon with those urls and charon will automatically scarpe proxies from them . how u do it
goto scan options -->>proxy scanning options --> configure lechable pages --> enter the urls u want to leech for proxy scarping
then simply goto check proxies and click on leech more pages for proxies


another way is to search for keywords like proxylist , free proxies etc in google and then scrape all the urls google return and then scrape proxies from all the urls

goto check proxies--> scan search engine for proxies

charon will use a list of keyword in the file googlesearchwords.txt in the charon directory to search google for new proxies . u can add more keywords if u want to

another way is to scan for IP ranges , this will scan the whole range of IP's like from 222.45.6.1 to 222.45.6.255 ---in this the software will scan for all the proxies between these two parameters and then check each IP address to see if it can work as proxy [If u are new to proxy harvesting and all avoid this ] when u click on scan ip ranges for proxy it will open a input box with instructions to insert ip ranges and scan them for new proxies

In fact it does, thank you VERY much.

So Charon is able to identify and save IP Addresses & ports? I'm familiar with the word "scrape", but I want to know exactly what it means in this case.

It (Charon) looks for "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:yy" ? What if the format is "xxx.x.xxx.xxx:yy", or "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:yyyy" ? I'm asking because I see web pages all over the place that have IP Addresses that might be working proxies. Like this one:

I didn't like this one because the IP Addresses/Ports could not be copied & pasted easily. I've seen some sites where they give you a simple .txt file. All that HTML stuff would mess up the list.

But if Charon can automatically scrape those IP's, then you don't HAVE to have a .txt file.

Also, what's a "judge"? What's an "internal" judge vs. an "external" judge? Is it necessary? Useful? Thanks in advance.

A proxy judge is a proxy server tester, which tests and rates it. A proxy judge can be used in most of the proxy checking programs like Charon, AATools, Proxyrama, AccessDiver and others. You can find a free proxy judge by typing "inurlrxjdg.cgi" or "intitleroxyJudge V2" or "intitle:AZ Environment variables 1.04" in the Google search engine. If you want to set up your own proxy judge, you can use some freeware CGI or PHP scripts.

What a proxy judge does is gathers data from a request, and outputs it. This way the proxy applications know what data the proxy they are testing sends out with each request, and rate it's anonymity depending on the proxy judge's output.

Thank you very much for this detailed answer. Is there a difference in judges? Are some faster/slower? Do some give out more information than others? Are there favorite, well-known judges? Is the internal judge "good enough"?

well you can search google for proxy judges and can find a list of some , the next thing will be putting thewm in charon and check if they are any good .
move the bad judges to the unused judge list .

judges have different work -like i have a judge to check if proxies are good for twitter
also u can check if the proxies are blacklisted or not using charon blacklist checker ..... what is it ? it check ur proxy against spamhaus and project honeypot database of spam IP adddress and check if ur proxies are listed for spam

suppose u use a proxy which is listed in spam haus for making senuke accounts then those accounts will be banned soon as the proxy u are using is listed for spamming

when u see ur proy not listed in them , the proxy is considered as good and ur accounts will most likely stick


Spamhaus and project honeypot check proxies(IP in their case) for different things like
Harvesting (using scarpebox )
dictionary attack
comment spamming
spam (spamming inbox and someother kinds like xrumer and all)
Attacks / exploits etc (hacking fishing etc )
