I'm in the US now, but feel like a relocation is in order. I was down in Mexico for awhile a few months back, and decided the next place I go to needs to have a sink that I can brush my teeth in, and drinkable water.

I'm entertaining the idea of Toronto, but think Eastern Europe might be a bit more exciting.

Place Requirements:

I'd like to pay $500/m rent. More if utilities are included. The less, the better.

Not tropical

Solid Internet Connection (5+ MB/s)

A city setting where a car isn't required.

I speak English, French, and Spanish. I also like the idea of learning German although I'm open to any suggestions. (I'll be downloading the programs for the language, hammering out the lessons, and then picking up the rest when I arrive).

BHW spans the world, so I know you guys can point me in the right direction and offer some real suggestions.

Thanks. ~englandrm

What';s your nationality? Do you have any additional rights other than those confered by your natiuonality?

I'd probably just try and get a travel visa, as I don't think it will be a permanent relocation. Just a few months. (I think that's all I need), or I can apply for a student visa and take a course somewhere.

I'm a dual Citizen of US and Canada.

@zivmaymon

WORD but dangerous

try germany :p high tech .. high-speed internet , night-life
lots of bh'ters XD

Ukraine, I heard rents are cheap there, and the ukranians girls are too hot for this world. Sweden or Finland would be a good option too, just the prices are a little higher in those countries. Belarus would be great too, cheap country, good security and the only problem is that they speak in Russian.

I'm definitely partial to Germany. Anyone have any suggestions about there, and any idea of the price points I'd be looking at?

Bulgaria.. seriously I am not kidding. Look at my signature. Talk to that guy on Fiverr he is a UK EXPAT and loves it.

you may regret this mistake. Moving from USA to a country from Eastern Europe. By the way, Germany is not in Eastern Europe. I think it's better to stay in USA.

Germany is pretty good, but I dont know if you can get cheap prices as rent for only $500. I would check info in Internet before and try to talk with a German.

I live in Toronto and I can tell you that there is no way that you will be able to find a place to live for $500 a month without having rats as roommates.

Not even out in Scarborough? I think for $500 a month he can get a room out there with a Scarborough suitcase thrown in weekly no?

Ya.. Toronto seemed pricey when I was there.. I think most of Canada would be out of your price range.. Maybe Newfoundland? You save on showers there.. just piss into the wind and you will smell like a local..

So you are Germanian, good. Can I get your service in my country?

I am Bangla..............................

I can pop up the price of my rent, it's just I'd prefer to keep it as low as possible.

I'm a huge fan of Tim Ferriss of the Four Hour Workweek, and while the book is a few years old he said he had an "enormous apartment in the trendy SoHo-like-Prenzlauerberg District of Berlin Including Phone and Energy: $300 US per month." -4HWW

Obviously being a few years old I'll assume prices have increased, but even doubling would still be affordable for me. I pay $750 where I am now, and was hoping that by moving, I'd be able to cut it down.

There are places in Germany where you can get a 2 room appartment (+kitchen and bath) for 300-500€. Depending on the city, the appartment could also be located in the inner city.
However, prices in the east like Berlin or Leipzig are way lesser than in Munich for example.

The problem you are facing is, that you don't speak German and most renter will have problems with your source of income. So you would have to find one who does not care about that (will be not easy, when you want to get a nice appartment).

One other option for you could be Ramstein.
A lot of americans live there and there are also 2 huge areas with malls and everything you can find in the US. Furthermore, there are a lot of renters who only rent their appartments to american people.
You could check that out and see if you like Germany and move on if you don't.

But i can tell you that the location is kinda boring, although there is a lot you can do there. Mainly of course drinking on the streets, staying up all night hustlin around the city, insulting cops and waking up in a small "jail", paying 50€ and going home in the afternoon when you are not drunk anymore.
Repeat that until weekend is over.

I would suggest you something near the alps, bodensee for example, a very beautiful place.
