I don't know if any SEO math exists that can estimate how many links it takes to get a paticular page rank but I figured I'd ask. Lets say I wanted to reach a PR of 1. Would a do-follow link on a PR5 be enough for example ? Would I need 100 PR1 links to get a PR1 ?

You were correct when you said there isn't math for that sorta thing. You can have 50k backlinks, and still be a PR 0.

You also don't have to have a higher page rank to out rank other sites. In other words, measuring your PR is not a good indicator of how you are going to rank.

Consider this too - a site might have a high PR and tons of links, but if they aren't optimized for a specific keyword, then how much are they really worth?

If you want to rank for "pocket knives" and pocketknives.com has a PR of 6, then yeah, that's hard. But if it's Walmart is at number 1 with a PR of 6 but no title/description tags and no backlink anchor that say "pocket knives", then their authority doesn't mean as much for that keyword.

PR is useless nowadays. Google hasn't publicly updated PR in ages so its old now. You've got to have decent unique content ;)

So until they update again, everyone with a new site will remain PR0 ? I'm a bit confused there. I thought they changed every few weeks or something.

Nopes google update are once in a month i hope so and after the update you may get a PR else remain the same.

First of all - the PR that G uses are calculated on the fly. But the toolbar is only updated 2-3 times a year!

Because it's updated on the fly and we only see a delayed PR, then is it not possible to give a clear answer. But it depend a lot on OBL on the site where you place a link.

Make a search for page rank calculation. That should give you a better understanding.

Actually it depends on the quality of backlinks. You can get a good PR If you've only 5 quality high page ranked backlinks comparing to 1000 poor quality links. So just maintain the quality rather than focusing on to the quantity.

I think content and keywords are the most crucial part.Your links should be up to the mark and should be made on high PR sites.
