what resolution do I need, plus the dimension of a photographer needs to be in order to print it as large as 24x24 inches, and the quality could be very sharp? (so I can hang it on the wall)

well IMO you'd want around a 24mp image to be able to print at 2400dpi for a 1 to 1 enlargement

LOL, in theory it sounds lovely...

But unfortunately... I don't have (yet) $19,000CAD in order to buy a 24MP camera

depending if you have a digital camera or not and how high resolution photos it can take you could have an 8x10 print made and then scan it at 2400dpi to get the 24mp image file (you'll give up some quality in the process but it should look nice)

alternatively check out CanvasPop
As the world's only large format printing company to work with images of any resolution, CanvasPop allows you to make gorgeous canvas prints of pretty much any image
or so they say...

Yeah. You would need a 20MP camera if you want it super sharp. Or go old school with a film camera. Then you can blow up and still get sharp images.

I use to be a pro photographer.

12 MP is good enough if its processed well with photoshop.

24x24 is not that big... in the grand scale of things.

today cameras capture lots of detail

Good Luck

2400 dpi is useless if you think to print it. Mostly (And yes this is true) 300 dpi is enough to print a photo for that size. 600 dpi is of course better. But higher values are just cheating numbers.
