How to rank for local keywords?

Really newbie questions here , but i've never done research and was wondering how do you rank for local keywords ? Say if i wanted to rank for make money online but particularly top 3 for New zeland , what factors will be considered by Google ? How do i make sure i'm rank for make money online in New Zeland? Or maybe Sex toys in Japan for example . Hope you guys get what I mean here .

To help with local ranking as you are suggesting make sure you have the top level domain for the country and also have your site hosted in on a server in the country you are trying to rank for. Also get links from other TLD domains.

So for example if you wanted to rank in Google.co.uk make sure to use a .co.uk domain and a server in the UK. Get lots of links from other sites with .co.uk domains and hosted on uk servers.

Now even tho you could have both the domain and hosting it will still be very difficult and take time for a keyword like 'make money online'.

What does google take into concideration when ranking websites for keywords on local searches.

True about the TLDs actually I use .info on UK servers that rank well in google.co.uk.

I usually use a uk host on all my sites tho and all my domains always do better in Google.co.uk
