Why is this website outranking mine?

There is a website that I have been trying to beat now for some time for particular keywords related to the services that we offer and for whatever reason, they remain at the top of listing even through Google Places, they are position above the local listings. Can anyone help?

I'd really appreciate any advice. My site has more backlinks than theirs, of similar quality and our content is also, according to IBP, as good as if not better than them. And neither site has the keyword within the domain name etc.

I'd really appreciate your help as you're more seasoned SEO professionals than I am.

Our site was created 3 years before that, so it can't be age. Plus ours is also a .co.uk.

server doesn't make a difference, neither does TLD.

Domain age does, but since yours is older it can't be that.
Authority & backlink quality too.

I have a .info domain on UK server that does A LOT better in Google.co.uk then it does in .com.

So from my personal experience it does make a difference (even if only a little).
 
Just a little information here to help people come to conclusions about host location and TLDs - I have a .net site, hosted in the US that is targeting the UK. It ranks 20th in G.com but is not even in the top 500 for G.co.uk. The setting on webmasters even says to target the UK.

From my experience host location and TLD do make a difference.
 
Their PR is 4, as is ours. Maybe that could be something to do with it that, despite the fact that our site is 3 years older, they have the same PR as us?

I'll check out the server information too. I think it might be Go Daddy, so could be located in the US.
 
Thanks for that, that has provided a little insight I think, but I don't think anything conclusive on why they are doing quite so well.

There could be various reasons:
1. Site Speed and Loading Time
2. Quality of the Backlinks to both websites
3. Social Signals
4. Backlink diversity (I am talking about Tropical Trust Flow and Citation Flow)
 
You can buy an old domain above now you have, and make 301 re-direction to your site.
Check with the page loading speed.
Content and quality of backlinks.
And also CF/TF ratio.Because CF:TF-->2:1 is better.Maybe your site will have more CF compared to TF.
 
some great advice here. i'm trying to figure out something similar. got a site which ranks #3 for the desired kw + region. however the #1 has no links to it! its driving me nuts well over a year now
 
Are you using the correct hreflang tags (ie en or en-gb), as well as international targeting in Google Search Console?
 
As I see it, I think that you not pass it is because your site has a greater antiquity than yours, and both are in United Kingdom.
