Google places question

So I've spent a good deal of time optimizing a google places account for state specific keywords using google places unleashed, but I can't seem to get into the top 7. For some reason, all the top 7 are in different parts of the state and the places page I'm working on is sitting at 71 of 80 in the places results. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

How long did you wait before you checked? If you just completed your Google Places, give it a couple weeks to register. It also depends on how optimized your account is vs. the other 7. Some other factors include reviews/ ratings, relevant content, etc.

Thank you - It's been a few weeks. Optimized the photos, videos, and we have similar number of reviews. On top of that, the organic search results for the same keywords, the site is #3. :/

Any tricks?

You should be targeting cities not states with google places.

It takes some time for it all to come together. Up to 90 days in some heavy competition. Keep building citations in the meen time and build backlinks to them

I keep reading about this but what if the business is in a small city, am I able to target multiple cities even if the business isn't located in mentioned city but is the neighboring city?

Can take upto 3 months for your listing to 'update' a listing i did for a friend took just under 3 months from creating it to show on google places, when it did it came in strong at 2nd and now firmly sits on top of the pack for the keyword. Just give it some time and if you have done everything right you will see the effects.
