Google penalties, are these real?

I've experienced and can verify.

Duplicate content does have a penalty as google wont rank the same content over and over.

Xrumer profiles without a shadow of a doubt are detected almost instantly and do cause a penalty.

This is just my opinion but I'm pretty sure nothing you do off site can cause you a penalty.

Why, you ask?

Because it would make it to easy to reverse-SEO your competition. If buying backlinks caused a penalty, we would have a war where people buy backlinks for their competitors sites.

It would be "oh shit, I just got a 50k blast to my site. damn competition"

I can 100% verify from my own expierence that this penalty exist.

Here is my story:

I have a website which is 7 years old, and have an outbound links to relevant/high autority websites.

Site always ranks #1 on google for almost all these 7 years. One day I saw drop -10 in SERPS, had no clue what's happening until I checked all the outbound links (which is do-follow btw) and found one site which was infected (red firefox screen.

I have removed that site link and a few days later my site was back to it's previous positions.

So, the moral is: if you have some outbound links (even to very high authority websites) don't forget to check them time to time. Or if your site suddenly drops -10, don't forget to check your outbound links, because that might be the reason.

All of these are blackhat and very susceptible to invoke google penalties

The only replies you are going to get are subjective answers or experiences from a small pool of BHers, which is let me remind you not an average IMer.

What Im trying to say is, never ever put much value on someones opinion. Just see what works, spin it and do it. If it stops working try something else.
There are to few case studies out there only 2 I know off here on BHW that really tried to fundament to built on. But even those dont know the whole story for the simple reason that the storyteller (let it be google or any other internet authority) simple doesnt want you to know and when you do know they will change it in a heartbeat.

this penalty is called end of results or 950 penalty because the pages are send to near the end of results...

the solution is to check for keyword density and reduce all keywords below to %4 and the pages come back in 1-2 days.

One of my sites is hit with a nasty penalty. For weeks my site would jump from page 2 to page 80 for all my keywords... back and forth daily. Now it's stuck waaaay at the back of the SERPs. All I can think of what I did wrong is linked it from some of my autoblog sites to pass some PR juice. I removed all the links and asked for a reconsideration. I'm guessing that's all I can do for now.

Yes, but its kind of like trying to attack your enemy by having a vampire kill him. Yes, he will die today and be out of your hair for awhile...but after some time...he is going to comeback stronger, flying around and kicking the crap out of you twice as hard

So yeah, you can blast your competitors and yeah, they will disappear...for awhile...but then they will come back stronger. Most of us don't want to can't handle disappearing for months at a time and would rather slowly move up and always be nice and cozy on the radar
