SEO Book - good newbie stuff, take it with a grain of salt (a big grain of salt), lot of fill-up content
StomperNet video courses - again good for basics
SEOMoz.com - probably better than the above
Research Papers pertaining to SE and spam algorithms - for when you're already at the next level
Reverse engineering successful sites
Hacking & security books so you develop a hacker mindset (priceless)
Learn a programming language (I recommend PHP and/or Python)

Well good thing is I already got the programming/hacking skills
I can program a million sites, but first is figuring out where best to focus my time/effort/money. Doing a lot of testing on what works and what doesn't, but seems to be pieces of information everywhere.
From what I can tell, the general rule of thumb is, get a bunch load of links, the higher PR the better.

Google Scholar is a good resource for research papers. Search stuff like "link spam detection", etc.
Links are not equal. Don't fall in the trap of thinking many links is OK. Focus on quality. The harder a link is to get, the more valuable it is. And don't look for PR all the time. Sometimes a page that now is PR0 or PR n/a but is on a PR8 site that has a good internal linking structure, could one day become a PR5 page easily.
