I am pretty familiar with all the black hat SEO methods and with BH tools such as Xrumer, Scapebox, AMR etc, however, I am quite unfamiliar with the process of SEOing legit businesses. I have looked around, but most of the threads talk about on-site optimization and not off-site optimization.

For legit businesses (for example client's websites), what are the methods for off-site optimization?

Doing it the legit way would mean doing it naturally. IE, not doing anything at all and let the Backlinks come naturally so to speak. So, we're talking a huge investment in advertising campaigns, social promotion etc... that's why they say, if you want to get ahead you need to get a hat! ;)

To be honest, I would use linkpushes to cloak my BH methods. Perhaps create some Web 2.0 properties, or other mediums, and put some unique, high quality articles on there (so they look legit to the business). Then I would blast the shit out of those properties.

I think you are in the wrong place. Asking that question on BHW is like asking hookers for career advice for your daughter...

although the weight of the following keeps changing due to G's updates consider the following for off-site promotion.

  • DMOZ
  • YD
  • press releases about services/products and send them to webmasters ofcourse include links etc
  • pyramid link building/linkpushing
  • sponsor 'fan' websites with related topics/niche ( most of them are happy to post a link on there site for a few bucks a month saying 'sponsored by yourlink' (ofcourse take nice pr sites )
  • actually blog commenting for backlinks but only to highly relevant sites with highly relevant comments (takes a bit longer as you actually would need to read the blog but comments will stick and will never be seen as spam ).
  • Social media, make sure the company has an account on twitter, fb, yt etc and let it link to company site regulary ( not spam )
good luck

I completely and utterly disagree with you!

I have learnt more about whitehat SEO on this forum than any other forum!

To be a decent SEO you must be able to do your job by using only whitehat methods while staying clued up on the blackhat ways. I work for a large insurance comparison website in the UK, if I used blackhat methods then I would be sacked and cause a whole load of trouble!

OK blackhat might be more fun, and damn its alot easier but dont go tarning everyone with a blackhat brush by thinking they dont know how to do whitehat seo

It might suprise you with the amount of people on this forum that could outrank you with just whitehat methods.........ok might take a little longer but they will!

Are link wheels, article submittion, and directory submission considered white hat?

This is so true. Good laugh = GL.

Just because you have clients it doesn't mean that you must turn yourself into a white shining rabbit and pull flaming carrots out of your behind.

Give them what they want.

It's a whole new ball game for legit SEO... Lots of work with no promises...
