I figured I'd try a new domain registrar other than godaddy since it seems they constantly jack up the prices.

So I saw someone recommend 1&1 because it was cheap. Its true their domains are 5$ for the first year then 8$ after that. So its good in that sense. However, I guess the term, "you get what you pay for." is unfortunately true for this domain registrar.

So once you register your domain they go out and buy the domain for you. So you'd think this would take maybe 1 hour MAX. Not for 1&1, it took about 2 days to actually be able to change the DNS settings. So I chance the DNS setting, normally with godaddy these changes take effect in 15 mins or less. Not for 1&1 it takes another 2 days for it to update. Meanwhile you have zero control over the domain. Your domain is registered and active but instead of being redirected to your host it sits online posting 1&1 parked domain ads.

Don't use 1&1 if you want to use the domain immediately. Godaddy is better. If, however, you are buying a bunch of domains and aren't going to use them immediately then you can go with 1&1 and save alittle cash but don't except good service.

Just a word to the wise!

LOL I heard bad things about 1&1 a long time ago and I've never used them. I'm a loyal customer of Hostgator but used to be with Globat. Now that's a company that really sucks. Never sign up with them either.

I use 1&1 all the time. No prob. I have about 100 domains w/ them. Also way cheaper. Their interface does suck and service is a bit slow for resolving domain names initially but, other than that not bad.

I had several personal domains purchased and hosted with 1and1 for the past several years. I absolutely HATE their interface and everything with them is so slooooooow. I finally moved my domains to NameCheap and have been absolutely thrilled with the performance, features and price and included whois privacy. They often have coupons (I got something like $3.99 transfers recently and moved all my domains at that point) and their service is just stellar. I'm not using their web hosting, so I can't say anything about that, but their domain hosting rocks.

BTW - They are an independent ICANN registrar, but are still operating as an eNom reseller until they get their systems switched over.

ditto, NameCheap is great. Been with them almost 4 yrs now, no probs.

I switched 70 domains from 1&1 over to godaddy. I got so pissed at 1&1 because I couldn't even find the expiry dates of my domains. WTF????

Just do a search on google for "1&1 debt recovery" they are threatening to send around bayliffs to my house claiming I owe them money.

They set up auto renewal in their system so when the domain runs out the card on file is charged with the renewal. Unfortunately for them I cancelled the card way before the renewal so they started sending me threatening letters in the post saying they were going to send around bayliffs. I wrote a letter to them telling them basically to get fucked and I'd see them in court and they never bothered replying.

99% of the time they are trying it on, but watch out for them. They are one of the biggest scammers out there.

I recently registered 2 domains with them... took forever for them to be available to use. Then i decided to try there smallest hosting package. Canceled that the next day, got a refund.

I use a few different registrars and I have to say 1 & 1 is VERY slow with getting things done. Also, they do make it hard to figure out how to get out of the autorenewal. They do have one plus which is why I have used them and still do occasionally - FREE privacy. Which I like to have, but hate to pay for.

I agree that they suck - I have about 30 domains registered with them. They recently implemented a policy where all of the domains will auto-renew ON THE SAME DAY!! So instead of spending $8 here and there, it's $240 all at once.

Oh, and don't even try their hosting. Bad news.

I didn't know this either, until i ordered 10 throwaway domains from them in february with a prepaid card.
I were wondering what the hell, the domains still not active after a day and they didn't bill the card. I spent the money off the credit card somewhere else.
And i guess they bought and kept the domains because the account is getting remainders from them daily for the unpaid balance. ;)

I can completely vouch with the negative comments for 1 & 1. About 4 months ago I tried to register 3 domain names. I registered them when 1 & 1 server's were down, which I had no idea about. So after a few hours when I check back I noticed the domain names were still not registered, I called them up and thats when they explained their servers were down. Which is ironic because the servers to get on their website and register domains were not down, but the servers that would actually complete the process for registeration were not working. They told me I would have to call back on Monday to complete registeration, but it was like a Thursday. I refused that option and told them I wanted my money back, they told me I would have to wait. I registered the same names through (really I forgot) and then called them back. 1 & 1 said it would cancel out since I registered with another company and automatically be refunded. Then the following Monday I got an email to confirm my registeration of the domains, called them again and they said someone did not get the memo about me cancelling. But I could not understand how they could send an email like this following me registering with another company, and it was not like they could charge me.

Terrible experience people do not use 1 & 1 for anything.

1&1 should be put on the shit list lol. I reged three domains and i can never use them since they will not honor a password reset. ( i forgot which email i used) i also emailed them from all my email addresses its been weeks and still no respond... I use NameCheap and Netfirms both are awesome and quick!

Lol. I just remembered after reading your post. I had xfered all my domains away from 1&1 I had nothing left in there. I canceled everything and they made it really hard to shut it down and close the account but I finally did it after hours of bulls#it on the phone trying to get up to the next tier of customer service.

Anyways I get a damn collection notice from them like six months latr saying I owe them for a hosting plan I never shut down. Lol I should have told the to eff off as well.

Don't use them You will regret it

I have more than 100 domains with them and everything is fine.

Yes, the domains take few days to get activated and you need to know T&C about auto-renewal. But overall, no issues.

I had terrible experiences with Netfirms and won't use them again. Namecheap is good, but they're expensive when you have a larger number of domains.

everything in this thread is true about 1&1...but unfortunately i have about 50 domains with them...they suck ass and are slow...but now that everything is up and running...im fine...i would not fuck with godaddy under any circumstance again...they jack ur domains when u check for domain availability and their privacy costs a grip (still got 6 domains with them cuz i signed up for 3 years when i first got into IM and didnt know any better)...i was with namecheap for a sec...but i think 1and1 was cheaper...so thats why i switched.

I disagree with you, 1&1 doesn't offer top-level services but they are not expensive at all and very reliable. I'm one of their costumers since 5 years and I never had to complain. As I bring them costumers, I get rewarded each time :) But they are very very long in payment and it's check only.

I worked with 1&1 a few years ago. Biggest mistake.
Now im back with godaddy.

no one renews their domain after 1 year? its very expensive the 2nd year and I believe cost money to even transfer away... awful I dont know why they keep getting recommended for the scam coupons they have
