Hosting - Server Location

I'd never really taken this into consideration before now but was reading up the other day about whether or not geographic location of the hosting servers affects SEO.

Seems to be pretty split from what I read but I recently moved all my sites over to hostgator who's servers are based in the US. A couple of my .co.uk domains seem to have suffered a bit.

My .com domain has always been hosted by hostgator and gets mainly US traffic. My audience is worldwide, although UK traffic converts better for me so am now in the process of changing over my sites to UK servers to help improve my google.co.uk rankings.

What are your thoughts? Does google still take this kind of thing into consideration?

A lot of people have offshore VPS in order to host their Scrapebox, Xrumer, etc. It shouldn't have an effect really. Afterall, it's about content and back links. Who am I to say though, it's my best guess.

as good as I know yet.
google also care about the backlink geolocation for example if you have many backlinks from .de .uk location your ranking on google.co.uk and google.de will be better.

Yes but is your site a .de? For a .com it's a different story!

Just make sure to add the country as UK in webmaster tool and ccTLD links matter a lot!! . If u do this i dont think u need to change the server.

If you target a high competitive kw, then does everything matters. The speed of your host server has an impact and do does the IP.

But if you "only" target low to middle competitive kw, then would I not worry to much about the IP location.

Best to keep em in the US, most reliable and you know what you get. Blackhat though means you might want to look at lenient countries like Sweden.

Guy knows his stuff. The location doesn't matter, what matters is server response speed. By hosting on the other side of the globe you get a bonus - the server load is low during the night and can better serve your daytime traffic.

It probably takes some resource to track websites across boundaries hence the suggestion with a hint of a threat. Try asking why an autoblog about politics hosted in Africa ranks higher than the original hosted 5 miles from the White House and see if you get any response.
